{"464241":{"#nid":"464241","#data":{"type":"news","title":"HSOC Doctoral Students Shine at SHOT Annual Meeting","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThree students in the School of History and Sociology\u0027s History and Sociology of Technology and Science doctoral degree program\u0026nbsp;participated in the 2015 annual meeting of the Society for the History of Technology, held October 8 - 11 in Albuquerque.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBrian Jirout, who currently holds a doctoral dissertation fellowship from the National Air and Space Museum, presented a paper entitled \u201cCivil Remote Sensing for Sale: Commercializing Landsat Image Use, 1978 - 1989.\u201d The paper was part of a panel entitled \u201c\u2019Up in the Air\u2019: Aerospace as Arenas for Public\/Private Cooperation and Contention.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEmily Gibson, a doctoral candidate and holder of a Dean\u2019s Fellowship, also presented at the session. Her paper, \u201cAir France \u2014 The World\u2019s Largest Airline: A Commercial Firm as the Chosen Instrument of France\u2019s Colonial Mission, 1948 - 1950s,\u201d utilized archival materials she obtained while serving as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech\u2019s campus in Lorraine, France.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGibson also participated in a special Presidential Roundtable entitled \u201cThe Future of SHOT: A Graduate-Led Forum.\u201d The session was organized in part by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/krige\u0022\u003EJohn Krige\u003C\/a\u003E, Georgia Tech\u2019s Kranzberg Professor of the History of Technology, and second-year HSTS doctoral student \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/dev.iac.gatech.edu\/Students\/graduate\/graduate-student-profiles\/alice-clifton\u0022\u003EAlice Clifton\u003C\/a\u003E, who presided at the event.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to airing a variety of views regarding the future of SHOT, the session provided Clifton an opportunity to secure signatures endorsing a petition she had drafted calling for creation of a special interest group devoted to graduate student issues. When approved by the SHOT executive council next spring, the SIG would enable students to shape the direction of the society by organizing sessions and other activities, using matching funds provided by SHOT.
