C4G Review Day

How can computing help make the world a better place?
Can we avoid wars, alleviate homelessness and improve global health using computers? What are the technical challenges that arise, and what humanistic issues have to be taken into account and understood in the process? In this second, expanded edition of the Computing 4 Good (C4G) class, we continued to explore problems faced by developing countries and underserved populations from a computing perspective.

Teams from the Fall 2009 class will present posters and demos of their research projects, which are being developed in cooperation with external partners. Application areas range from safeguarding national blood supplies to supporting after-school educational programs, to supporting Internet connectivity in remote regions, to enhancing awareness of and changing recycling behaviors, and more. A distinguished panel of leaders in community work and philanthropy will discuss the projects and the larger concepts of C4G.

Schedule

Poster & Demo Session:  2 p.m to 5 p.m.

Panel Discussion :  3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Reception :  4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Panelists include:

Protip Biswas
o Executive director of the Regional Commission of Homelessness in Atlanta

Jason Carter
o Cofounder of Democrats Work, grandson of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter

Jack Hardin
o Founding partner of Rogers & Hardin; former chair of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta

John Nkengasong
o Chief of the CDC's International Laboratory Branch

Ellen Zegura and Santosh Vempala
o    C4G class co-professors, will moderate

The Projects and Teams

Laboratory Information System
Ruban Monu, Kabir Barday, Jordan Garner, Manas Apte, Santosh Vempala (GT);
Mark DeZalia, John Nkengasong (CDC)

Trends and Analysis for the Shelter-to-Home Program
Joseph Woo, Daniel Lee, Jon Garner (GT);
Amber Scott, Protip Biswas (United Way)

Zero Training Care Management System User Interface
Supraja Narasimhan, Christian Szatkowski, Benjamin Heiskell, Daniel Stensland (GT);
Bill Matson (Pathways)

Social Services Consumer Portal
Sayan Basu, Dhruv Chopra, Sundip Patil, Praful Rana, Santosh Vempala (GT);
Protip Biswas (United Way); Bill Matson (Pathways)

Connectivity for Developing Regions with MyMANET
Hrushikesh Mehendale, Petar Tsankov, Chinmay Gangakhedkar, Victoria Au,
Ashwin Paranjpe, Santosh Vempala (GT);
Alan Stensland (FAA); Ashok Jhunjhunwala (TeNET)

GeTGreen
Amrit Bhavinani, Mohammad Asgharneya, Eric Sembrat, Scott Chapman,
Ellen Zegura (GT/CoC);
Daron Foreman, Cindy Jackson
(GT Facilities)

Education Portal
Omar Chanouha, Swetha Patnaikuni,
Sethuraman, Yash Kumar, Santosh
Vempala, Ellen Zegura (GT);
Engrid Gibbs (OPEACE)

World Food Garden Website
Andrew Baird, Lydia Barnes,
Ellen Zegura (GT);
Eve Sibley (World Food Garden)

Game for Asthma Technology Empowerment
Hee Young Jeong, Andrew Rosen,
Kyle McCaffrey, Rosa Arriaga (GT);
Joyce Essien, Yvette Samuels (ZAP)

Healthy Living 2020
Juan Patten, Anthony Knost,
Matthew DeVries, Nicholas O'Connell,
Ellen Zegura (GT);
Annie Archibald, Joanne Andreadis (CDC)

Vein-2-Vein (V2V)
Charlie Morn, Stephen Tyler,
Santosh Vempala (GT);
John Pitman (CDC Namibia);
Bright Mulenga (Zambia NBTS);
Christie Reed (CDC)

Districting and Redistricting in Democracies
Aaron Ciaghi, Stephen Long,
Mike Hunter (GT)

For More Information
http://computingforgood.wordpress.com
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~vempala/c4g.html
