This year\u0027s participants, the bulk of whom are about to graduate, came up with projects that tackled real needs- increasing the efficiency of businesses, designing life-altering medical products, or developing products that could disrupt commercial markets. The team that earned the best overall project award, Need A Hand, developed better 3D printed prosthetic limbs for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.notimpossiblenow.com\/the-latest\/project-daniel-3d-printed-prosthetic-anniversary\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EProject Daniel\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/notimpossible.com\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ENot Impossible Labs\u003C\/a\u003E- a charity that supplies prosthetics to some of the 50,000 amputees who have been maimed during the brutal war in Sudan. They were so inspired by the project that they plan to tweak continue tweaking their designs to send files for even better limbs to Sudan.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022They told us their design wasn\u0027t as good as they wanted it to be,\u0022 explained Brian Jo, one of the five mechanical engineers who comprised the team.\u0022 They wanted it to be more useful, more powerful, and more versatile. they told us to make a better design. Using the same tools that they had, and adding \u0026nbsp;a little bit more onto that, we decided to make a different design. We made it cheaper, more efficient, and more powerful. It was difficult, because over there in Sudan they have limited tools. Using what we had we created a design able to achieve all of the goals.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWe\u0027re hoping that while Not Impossible Labs is in Sudan we can continue to send them designs as we develop them. There\u0027s still room for improvement.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnother winner was \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission043\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ETeam Cold Cap\u003C\/a\u003E, an interdisciplinary team made up of mechanical and biomedical engineering students who developed a chilled apparatus for chemotherapy patients to wear that would prevent them from losing their hair during cancer treatments, greatly boosting the morale of those battling the disease. According to team member Alexandra Richardson they have three\u0026nbsp;provisional patents filed and are exploring options to take the Cold Cap to market.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOther teams were sponsored by local or national companies. \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission087\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EA group of\u0026nbsp;ISyE students\u003C\/a\u003E worked with Orpheus Brewing in Atlanta, identify a bottleneck in their brewing process and allowing them to increase production by 25 percent at no extra cost. Coca-Cola, which was the premiere sponsor of Capstone, sponsored several teams, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission118\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eincluding one which developed a door-less cooler\u003C\/a\u003E shown to increase sales and another that \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission074\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Efound ways to improve their weekly shipping forecast\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission021\u0022\u003ESkyveillance\u003C\/a\u003E, which was made of electrical and computer engineering majors, built an integrated network of antennas to detect signals transmitted by drones- a valuable tool as government agencies seek ways to regulate drone activity in restricted airspace.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShowing that you don\u0027t have to be bound by your discipline, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission057\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ea group of mechanical engineering students\u003C\/a\u003E with virtually no aerospace experience took on the challenge of fabricating mounting and cabling hardware and conducting thermal\/structural analysis for the RECONSO cubesat\u0026nbsp;which is being built at Georgia Tech and has a launch date in 2017.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOverall 113 teams from five schools (biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, industrial design, industrial and systems engineering, and mechanical engineering) participated\u0026nbsp;in this semester\u0027s design expo, capping off their undergraduate careers in style. With commencement quickly approaching many have already lined up jobs with companies like Delta, The Home Depot, Proctor \u0026amp; Gamble, and St. Jude Medical. Others will move on to graduate school or look for ways to turn their projects into startup companies, like \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/expo.gatech.edu\/projectdetails\/submission006\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECardiacConnect\u003C\/a\u003E, a biomedical team which received a golden ticket to the the 2016 Inventure\u0026nbsp;Prize.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe 2015 Fall Capstone Design Expo confirmed that Georgia Tech students are indeed \u0022Creating the Next\u0022. Students developed an innovative tool to assist with installation of lag screws on rail roads that would help improve employee health, safety, and performance.
