{"48140":{"#nid":"48140","#data":{"type":"news","title":"CULC Prototype Classroom to be Used for Spring Semester","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EA cross-campus partnership has converted a room in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Building into a smaller prototype of two planned Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons classrooms designed to alter pedagogy. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe room will be used across multiple disciplines\u2014including engineering, biology, modern languages and English\u2014as well as by the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBased on the SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Activities for Large Enrollment Undergraduate Programs) model developed at North Carolina State by Robert Beichner, the CULC Prototype Classroom has no \u0022teaching wall,\u0022 according to Sejal Patel in Capital Planning and Space Management. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EInstead, writing surfaces will be on all four walls, and three plasma screens will be mounted on two of the walls. Students will be arranged in three groups of nine, each group virtually linked to one of the screens. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The furniture is arranged in groups, for 27 total students,\u0022 Patel said. \u0022In the CULC, the classrooms will accommodate 30 and 45 students. We\u0027re testing these important things with this small-scale room: the furniture, the technology, the lighting and the pedagogy.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENational company Tidebreak is sponsoring a year\u0027s license to its software ClassSpot, which allows students to connect their laptops to the professor\u0027s, or vice versa, for true team-based collaboration. \u0022We currently don\u0027t have an application like this on campus,\u0022 Patel said. \u0022The idea is that there is no teaching wall.
