2020 Georgia Legislative Internship Program

Offered only in the spring, the 2020 Georgia Legislative Internship Program is an opportunity to meet state lawmakers and experience the legislative process first hand while working full time in offices in and around the state capitol in downtown Atlanta. One pressing problem for manufacturing cell and protein based therapies are suitable sensors for process monitoring and control.  Desired features are the ability to make measurements real-time, in-line, and without breaking the sterile environment.  The Reuel Group at Iowa State University researches methods of contact free measurement systems in closed environments (bioreactors, soil systems, bandages, etc.).  This is done with transducers that broadcast in frequency bands suitable for water and plastic penetration.  In this talk I will detail our work on 1) optical nanotransducers that fluoresce in the near infrared (900-1000nm) and 2) mesoscale resonators that resonate in the short wave radio frequency band (1-100MHz).  In both cases the transducer is rendered selective to a desired analyte by coating it with a selective agent that either promotes binding or undergoes a conformational change upon interaction.  When the target cell or protein interacts with the sensor surface, there is a frequency modulation that can be monitored from a distance.  The final results of hydrolytic enzyme activity characterization and ion concentration measurement as well as preliminary results for protein and cell binding assays using these two sensors will be presented to demonstrate their potential.   Their utility for media composition, cell viability, and cell potency monitoring will be discussed.

The Robotarium project provides a remotely accessible swarm robotics research platform that remains freely accessible to anyone. Opened on August 22, 2017, the 725-square-foot facility houses more than 100 rolling and flying swarm robots that are accessible to anyone. Researchers from around the globe can write their own computer programs, upload them, then get the results as the Georgia Tech machines carry out the commands.

The event includes tours of the facility and demonstrations, following an open house format. Feel free to drop by at any time from 2:00–3:00 p.m. All are welcome.

SeaPerch is a robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Atkinson is an internationally recognized scholar and a widely published author whom The New Republic has named one of the “three most important thinkers about innovation,” Washingtonian Magazine has called a “tech titan,” and Government Technology Magazine has judged to be one of the 25 top “doers, dreamers and drivers of information technology.”

Atkinson holds a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he was awarded the prestigious Joseph E. Pogue Fellowship. He earned his master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Oregon, which named him a distinguished alumnus in 2014.

Beginning July 6

The Maker Movement has seen a large increase in the need to infuse innovation and entrepreneurship into STEM courses. Helping students develop “innovation literacy” is becoming a new aspect of STEM education. Incorporating creativity techniques, games, as well as innovation techniques can greatly improve students’ interest in the subject matter, improve problem solving abilities, but also helps see how the STEM work relates to real world applications.

Each week, students will pre-read an article related to one of the following techniques: creativity, games, use of analogies, design thinking. Each synchronous session will provide additional details as well as a hands-on activity to help participants see how to integrate the technique.

• Registration is limited and submissions will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please complete the registration form early to ensure you, your student or student group can be accommodated.

Required Consent Forms

To attend the event, each student must have a parent or legal guardian complete a Parental Release Form, related to liability, and a Model Release Form, related to the use of photographs and video footage taken during the event. Chaperones should also complete the Model Release Form. These forms may be collected, scanned, and emailed in one file to NRW@robotics.gatech.edu prior to the event, or the primary point of contact may present paper copies of the signed forms during check in.

Event Parking

Personal vehicles should park in a campus visitor’s lot. The two closest locations are the Area 4 Lot, located at the intersection of Ferst Dr. and State St., and the Area 5 Lot (W23 Deck), located on State St., close to the intersection of 10th St. Buses must park on Tech Parkway NW.

• The Area 4 Lot fee rate is $2.00 per hour, payable in advance by cash or card.
• The Area 5 Lot fee rate varies by total hours parked, from $1.50 for up to one hour to $15.00 for six–24 hours.

Bus Parking Details

There is no charge to park buses in the designated area on Tech Parkway NW. Buses should plan to drop students off at the intersection of Ferst Dr. and Atlantic Dr. where signs will be posted directing them to the nearby check-in location. Afterward, bus drivers who elect to remain on campus must park on Tech Parkway NW.

Attire

Regardless of whether you are signing up for just one or both tour sessions, walking outdoors is a necessary component of this event. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather, which in Atlanta during spring may change without advanced warning. Transportation will be provided to some of the more remote tour locations on campus.

Lunch

Lunch will be held in the Marcus Nanotechnology Building, Rooms 1116-1118. Guests have the option of bringing a brown bag lunch or visiting the Georgia Tech student center to purchase a lunch. The student center offers a full-range of items in the food court, as well as additional options in the commons area, and is located less than a three-minute walk from Marcus. Bottled water will be available to all guests.

Muhannad Bakir has been appointed as the ON Semiconductor Junior Professor in Analog Integrated Circuit Design, effective August 15.

After graduating from Georgia Tech with his Ph.D. in ECE in 2003, Dr. Bakir worked as a research engineer in the Microelectronics Research Center/Nanotechnology Research Center until 2010 and then joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering as an associate professor. He also serves as the associate director of the Interconnect and Packaging Center, and he leads the 3D Integrated Systems Group, consisting of seven Ph.D. students who explore the design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D electronic systems and advanced interconnect networks.

Dr. Bakir's specific research and educational interests focus on 3D electronic system integration, advanced cooling and power delivery for 3D systems, biosensors and their integration with CMOS circuitry, and nanofabrication technology. The editor of the book, Integrated Interconnect Technologies for 3D Nanoelectronic Systems, he is the author or co-author of more than 70 refereed journal and conference publications, five book chapters, 12 U.S. patents, and multiple invited presentations.

Dr. Bakir has received numerous awards and honors at this early stage of his career. Most recently, he received the 2012 DARPA Young Faculty Award and the 2011 IEEE Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology Society Outstanding Young Engineer Award. He is also an invited participant to the 2012 National Academy of Engineering Frontiers in Engineering Symposium, which is taking place September 13-15 at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich.

Three initial areas of value-added collaboration in Materials were identified by Sandia management in an early 2015 visit to GT:

• Materials by Design (data sciences, informatics high throughput, optimization)

• Multiscale Materials Science (interface with data, upscaling, uncertainty, V&V)
• Materials in Extreme/Abnormal Environments (irradiation, corrosion, high rates and deformation

The December workshop will focus on Materials Data Science and Multiscale Materials Science. The second meeting will take place at Sandia, focusing on Materials in Extreme (and/or Abnormal environment) as well as Multiscale Materials Science (part II).  This workshop will occur in February or March 2016. We invite GT faculty with collaborative interests in these areas to attend.

The purpose of these workshops is to ensure both sides are aware of the existing collaborations, as well as to identify opportunities to forge new ones.  The future workforce and pipeline of students to Sandia is of core strategic importance to the Alliance.

The agenda includes overview presentations followed by GT faculty showcases (15 min each, 4 in each area). It also includes a poster session for graduate students working in these areas.   Those who do not participate in the showcase presentation can include a poster presentation on their work.  A subsequent invitation will be sent in the coming weeks for graduate students to present posters and attend the December 9 poster session.

About the C-STAR Distinguished Speaker
   Jim Crocker is Vice President and General Manager of the International line of business for Space Systems Company at Lockheed Martin Corporation. Space Systems International is the primary interface between Space Systems and Lockheed Martin International in order to maximize the inherent benefits of each entity. In this role, Mr. Crocker is responsible for international business strategy, capture management, new business orders closure and customer relationship management.
   Prior to assuming his current role, Mr. Crocker was Vice President and General Manager of the Civil Space line of business at Space Systems. He held executive responsibility for critical national space programs relating to human space flight and space science missions including: planetary, solar, astrophysical and Earth remote sensing for civil government agencies.
   He began his career as a junior engineer working on Apollo 17 and SkyLab missions. Since then Mr. Crocker has had an extensive career across the space industry, holding positions at Ball Aerospace and Technologies, the European Southern Observatory in Chile and Germany, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the Center for Astrophysics, Johns Hopkins University and Space Telescope Science Institute – all prior to joining Lockheed Martin in 2002.
   Mr. Crocker has led some of the world’s most important projects in astronomy and astrophysics. Notably, he is known for conceiving the idea and leading the team that developed COSTAR – the solution to the flawed optics of the Hubble Space Telescope. He also played a major role in the design and construction of the Very Large Telescope in Northern Chile and served as project manager for the construction of Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
   Mr. Crocker has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a Master of Science degree in engineering from the University of Alabama–Huntsville and a Master of Science degree in management from Johns Hopkins University.
   He is an Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and is a Fellow in the American Astronautical Society (AAS). Mr. Crocker has received numerous honors including the Space Telescope Science Institute Outstanding Achievement Award and two NASA Public Service Medals for his work on the Hubble Space Telescope. He is a recipient of the AIAA von Karman Lectureship in Astronautics Award, received the AAS Industrial Leadership Award and was elected to full member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
   Mr. Crocker is active in the local communities through STEM outreach initiatives and is a member, and past chair, of the Board of Trustees of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

About the Center for Space Technology and Research (CSTAR):
The Center for Space Technology and Research (C-STAR) organizes, integrates, and facilitates Georgia Tech's space science and technology research activities. C-STAR brings together a wide range of Georgia Tech faculty who are active in space-related research and functions as a focal point for the growth of the space industry in the state of Georgia. C-STAR personnel are advancing the frontiers of astrophysics, Earth science, planetary science, robotics, space policy, space technology, and space systems engineering. C-STAR was established in 2013 and is led by Robert D. Braun (Director) and Thomas Orlando (Associate Director). C-STAR is actively engaged in partnerships with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Georgia Department of Economic Development Center of Innovation for Aerospace, and the Georgia Space Grant Consortium.

Internships with OUSD(P) offer the chance to observe and participate in policy-making at the highest levels of the Department of Defense.  OUSD(P) has well served by interns who have worked here in previous years, but this year we are particularly interested in attracting a broader diversity of interns, both in terms of groups historically under-represented within our organization as well as students from diverse disciplines that might not typically consider an eventual career with the Department of Defense.  Details on applying:

• Interested individuals should apply by March 11, 2016 for summer internships (although internships are available throughout the year).  Interns are selected through a competitive process.

• The number of hours worked and schedules are negotiable, and dependent on the intern's school schedule.
• To apply, applicants must submit:  (1) a current resume that includes the applicant's expected graduation date; (2) a cover letter identifying the individual as an applicant for the Volunteer Student Internship Program, as well as stating the applicant's career area of interest and the timeframe or dates he/she would be able to work as an intern; and (3) unofficial transcripts that clearly show the applicant's grades and grade-point average.
• Note that volunteer internships do not offer salary, benefits, or conversion to permanent employment, and individuals selected will not be eligible to receive a transit subsidy.
• Interns must be able to qualify for a secret-level clearance, which requires a security background investigation. 
• Applicants must also be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution and in good academic standing (with at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale).
• Applicants should also have strong writing and editing skills, and have the ability to work in a collaborative environment.  Skill in interpreting, analyzing and summarizing data is also desirable, as is familiarity with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.

HOW IT WORKS

Offered each semester, selected students work full-time in federal government offices in and around Washington, D.C. for 16 weeks in the spring or 10 weeks in the summer. The opportunity includes a $7,500 stipend in the spring and a $5,000 stipend in the summer to offset expenses (housing, transportation, and living expenses). This program is open to both undergraduate (sophomore and above) and graduate students of all majors. International students are eligible to apply; however, some federal offices only accept applications from United States citizens.

Dr. La Scala is Associate for Science & Technology for Weapons and Materials Research Directorate of the Army Research Laboratory and works in the area of bio-based precursors for polymer composite materials and carbon fibers.

He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia in 1997 and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 2002. He was a postdoctoral scientist at Drexel University before becoming an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education postdoctoral fellow at ARL in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD in 2003.  In 2005, he was hired as a federal employee at ARL, promoted to senior scientist in 2007, and appointed branch chief of the Coatings, Corrosion, and Engineered Polymers Branch in 2009. 

Abstract

Polymer composite materials are derived from non-renewable petroleum sources, making their use unsustainable and causing their cost to be highly volatile.  Furthermore, polymer composite materials often contain toxic components or produce toxic emissions.  To address these issues, we have used plant-derived renewable resources to develop a number of polymer composite materials technologies with properties and performance similar to that of petroleum-derived composites.  We formulated and developed fatty acid-based vinyl ester resins derived from plant oils and successfully demonstrated and validated them on weapons platforms across the DoD.  We chemically modified lignin to produce lignin-based carbon fiber with the highest reported strength and modulus.  We have been addressing toxicity issues associated with bisphenol, a component used in the production of many high performance polymers.  Through use of polymers from lignin-derived chemicals, such as guaiacol, and carbohydrate-derived isosorbide and furans, we have created a number of polymers with properties similar or superior to that of commercial polymers.  Furthermore, we have shown that these bio-based chemicals and polymers have reduced toxicity relative to the baseline commercial polymers.  As a result, we are currently preparing diamines derived from carbohydrates and lignin to reduce the toxicity and improve the sustainability of polyimides and epoxies.

HOW IT WORKS

Offered only in the spring, the 2016 Georgia Legislative Internship Program is an opportunity to meet state lawmakers and experience the legislative process first hand while working full time in offices in and around the state capitol in downtown Atlanta. The internship period lasts approximately 12 to 16 weeks (January to April), depending on the length of the legislative session. The internship is open to all majors; however, it is restricted to Georgia-resident undergraduate students (sophomore and above) only. It is a paid internship, and students may also earn up to 12 hours of academic credit. A limited number of internship positions are available.

HOW IT WORKS

Offered each semester, selected students work full-time in federal government offices in and around Washington, D.C. for 16 weeks in the spring or 10 weeks in the summer.
