Cross one of 39 new appointees to the Defense Science\nBoard. Considered leaders and experts in engineering, science and technology as\napplied to the defense and military services fields, board members serve on\ntask forces and provide informed opinions and input on scientific, technical,\nmanufacturing, acquisition processes and related matters to DOD administrators.\nNominated by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Cross will serve for three\nyears, which is renewable for a second term.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe federal advisory board was\nestablished in 1956 as a standing committee that advises top Pentagon officials\non the \u201cneeds and opportunities presented by a new scientific knowledge for\nradically new weapons systems.\u201d The board has expanded to augment and assist\nwith the DOD\u2019s research and development strategies for the 21st century. Board\nmembers report to Secretary Gates, Deputy Secretary William J. Lynn III and\nUnder Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Ashton B.\nCarter. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cBoard members conduct studies at\nthe request of the secretary of Defense and the under secretary of Defense for\nAcquisition, Technology and Logistics on various issues at the forefront of\ntechnology and policy,\u201d Cross said. The entire board attends one two-day\nmeeting per quarter, while members of designated task forces meet throughout the\nyear. \u201cAt this time, I don\u2019t know what task force I will be supporting. It will\nlikely be one that matches my own research and engineering experience based in\nautonomous systems and software\/systems engineering.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003ECross, who served on the Defense\nScience Board Task Force on Defense Software in 2000, holds faculty\nappointments as a professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of\u0026nbsp; Industrial and Systems Engineering and\nas an adjunct professor in the College of Computing. He serves on Georgia Tech\nPresident G. P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson\u2019s cabinet and on the research advisory boards of\nthe Health Systems Institute, Bioinformatics, the Parker H. Petit Institute for\nBioengineering and Bioscience, the Strategic Energy Initiative and the\nTennenbaum Institute for Enterprise Transformation. He joined Georgia Tech in\n2003 after serving as director and CEO of the Software Engineering Institute at\nCarnegie Mellon University, which he joined in 1994. Previously, Cross was\nprogram manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Washington,\nD.C.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring his career, Cross has\nprovided expert testimony to Congress on several occasions; published more than\n60 papers on information technology and technology transition; and presented\nkeynotes at numerous institutional conferences. He earned a doctoral degree\nfrom the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983, a master of\nscience in electrical engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in\n1977 and a bachelor of science from the University of Cincinnati in 1974. A retired\nofficer of the Air Force, Cross attended the Air Force Test Pilot School-Flight\nTest Engineer Course, and served in various research and development\nassignments.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cSecretary\nof Defense Gates believes the [Defense Science Board] needs to be a professional\nboard representing the best scientific and expert advice available to the\nDepartment of Defense,\u201d Carter said. \u201cWe are grateful to these superb\nindividuals for their willingness to serve.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMembers are appointed by the\nSecretary of Defense for terms ranging from one to four years, subject to\napproval by the White House.
