Over the past 20 years supply chains have become dramatically more complex. As a result, managers find it increasingly difficult to achieve performance goals and control costs. Effectively coping with this complexity requires the ability to take the mountain of available enterprise data and turn it into information that can use as the basis for planning and controlling supply chains in near real time. This task is simply not possible without trained supply chain and logistics analysts with the proper tools to automate tactical decision making and to provide business intelligence for more strategic supply chain design and alignment decisions.

Some of the principles covered in the course include:
* How to use lean supply chain concepts as a framework for supply chain analytics
* How to determine if you have a reasonable amount of inventory
* How to improve inventory performance
* How to predict demand and other requirements
* How to control "last mile" costs
* How to align and synchronize transportation
* How to manage and reduce supply chain variability and risk, and
* How to design and coordinate supply chains

The lead instructors for the course are Drs. H.
