Faceplants are called faceplants because you’re planting your face into the ground as a means of breaking your fall, which usually also breaks your face, among other things. This tends to happen when you’re unprepared for falling, which with most robots, is 100 percent of the time. Now researchers at Georgia Tech want to teach humanoid robots to fall more safely with techniques adapted from judo, which might protect them enough to actually be able to get up again.

From the ancient abacus to supercomputers, the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., offers an array of rare artifacts and milestones from 2,000 years of “computing” history. This summer at a special exhibition, a new breed of computer drew more than 30,000 visitors and showed how computing has become synonymous with daily life.

Georgia Tech’s “On You: A Story of Wearable Computing” exhibit curated more than 60 gadgets chronicling the history of making on-body technology a reality. The exhibit showed devices that have been envisioned for consumers and professionals and by “makers.” It showed four major challenges to a consumer wearable computer - power and heat, networking, mobile input, and displays - and the product categories that have resulted.

Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have developed a new process to teach computers to understand and predict our daily routines, which for now, involves a wearable camera that snaps a photo every 30 to 60 seconds. At the end of the day, the camera-wearer goes through the photos and labels each image based on the activity that was happening — eating, reading, whatever the subject didn’t delete later for privacy reasons. The images are then put into a generic prediction model, essentially training a computer to understand and categorize the activities.

Google Glass, Fitbits, and the Apple Watch are just the latest products in a long evolution of wearable technology. One of the earliest examples was developed in 1955: a computer the size of a deck of cards, wedged in a shoe, to help gamblers up the odds on roulette in Vegas. Then, in the early 1990s, Georgia Tech computing professor Thad Starner started wearing his homebrew computing device: safety goggles with a personal display glued to them, attached to a small handheld controller and a wireless modem.
