Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1987. He then assumed the position of Assistant Professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Computing\u003C\/a\u003E at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Institute of Technology\u003C\/a\u003E where he now holds the rank of Regents\u0027 Professor and is the Director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/ai\/robot-lab\/\u0022\u003EMobile Robot Laboratory.\u003C\/a\u003E He also serves as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech since October 2008. During 1997-98, Professor Arkin served as STINT visiting Professor at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nada.kth.se\/cas\/\u0022\u003ECentre for\u003Cbr \/\u003E Autonomous Systems\u003C\/a\u003E at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.kth.se\/\u0022\u003ERoyal Institute of Technology (KTH)\u003C\/a\u003E in Stockholm, Sweden. From June-September 2005, Prof. Arkin held a Sabbatical Chair at the Sony Intelligence Dynamics Laboratory in Tokyo, Japan and then served as a member of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Group at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.laas.fr\/laas\/\u0022\u003ELAAS\/CNRS\u003C\/a\u003E in Toulouse, France from October 2005-August 2006.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Arkin\u0027s research interestsinclude behavior-based reactive control and action-oriented perception formobile robots and unmanned aerial vehicles, hybrid deliberative\/reactive software architectures, robot survivability, multiagent robotic systems, biorobotics, human-robot interaction, robot ethics, and learning in autonomous systems. He has over 170 technical \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/ai\/robot-lab\/publications.html\u0022\u003Epublications\u003C\/a\u003E in these areas. Prof. Arkin has written a textbook entitled \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/behavior-based-robotics\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EBehavior-Based Robotics \u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003Epublished by MIT Press in May 1998, co-edited (with G. Bekey) a book entitled \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.springeronline.com\/sgw\/cda\/frontpage\/0,11855,4-147-22-33317431-0,00.html?changeHeader=true\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ERobot Colonies\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E published in 1997, and a book published in Spring 2009 entitled \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Governing-Lethal-Behavior-Autonomous-Robots\/dp\/1420085948\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8\u0026amp;s=books\u0026amp;qid=1239284045\u0026amp;sr=8-1%22\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EGoverning Lethal Behavior in Autonomous Robots\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E published by Chapman-Hall (Taylor \u0026amp; Francis). Funding sources have included the National Science Foundation, DARPA, U.S. Army, Savannah River Technology Center, Honda R\u0026amp;D, Samsung, C.S. Draper Laboratory, SAIC, NAVAIR, and the Office of Naval Research. Dr. Arkin serves\/served as an Associate Editor for \u003Cem\u003EIEEE Intelligent Systems\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EInternational Journal of Social Robots\u003C\/em\u003E, and the\u003Cem\u003E Journal of Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing\u003C\/em\u003E, as a member of the Editorial Boards of \u003Cem\u003EAutonomous Robots\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EMachine Intelligence and Robotic Control\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EJournal of Intelligent Service Robotics\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EJournal of Field Robotics\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems\u003C\/em\u003E, and the \u003Cem\u003EJournal of Applied Intelligence\u003C\/em\u003E, and is the Series Editor for the MIT Press book series \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/series\/intelligent-robotics-and-autonomous-agents-series\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EIntelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. He also serves\/served as a consultant for several major companies in the area of intelligent robotic systems. Prof. Arkin serves on the Board of Governors of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ieeessit.org\/\u0022\u003EIEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology\u003C\/a\u003E, being elected to a 3-year term (2010-2012) by the membership. He was also elected to serve two consecutive\u003Cbr \/\u003E 3-year terms on the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/IEEE-RAS\/RAS\/OfficersShort.html\u0022\u003EAdministrative Committee of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society\u003C\/a\u003E in both 1999 and 2002, served as the co-chair of the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Robot Ethics from 2004-2009 and co-chair of the Society\u0027s Human Rights and Ethics Committee from 2006 to the present, is the IEEE RAS liaison to the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology, and also served on the National Science Foundation\u0027s Robotics Council from\u003Cbr \/\u003E 2001-2002. In 2001, he received the Outstanding Senior Faculty Research Award from the College of Computing at Georgia Tech.
