<![CDATA[2023 Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage ]]>27615 Georgia Tech is proud to honor the legacy of a great alumnus and civic leader, former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. The Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage shines a light on those around the world who bravely act to improve the human condition, often in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
The 2023 recipient is Christiane Amanpour.
The entire campus community is invited to attend a fireside chat on Monday, April 24, in the Atlantic Theater in the John Lewis Student Center. CNN correspondent Tom Foreman will moderate the chat.
The Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage was first awarded in 2011 and is funded in perpetuity by a grant from the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation.

The Oxford Program consists of one week of pre-departure classes in Atlanta followed by five weeks traveling throughout continental Europe. Once the Travel Portion concludes, students spend six weeks studying in Oxford, England while living at Mansfield College. Earning twelve credit hours along the way, students have the opportunity to seize the only chance in their lives to take a 11-week adventure to study and learn first-hand through the lens of multiple European cultures.
The Pacific Program is a 12 week long Georgia Tech faculty-led study abroad program that takes place during the spring semester. The program travels to countries throughout the Pacific Ocean, spending the first 6 weeks in New Zealand and the remaining 6 weeks in various parts of Australia. This once in a lifetime experience allows students to be immersed in multiple different cultures while earning 12-13 class credits.

Michney is an Associate Professor in the School of History and Sociology, and Raymond is an Assistant Professor in the School of City and Regional Planning. The book follows a multigenerational saga of a family and a community in Tulsa’s Greenwood district, known as “Black Wall Street,” that in one century survived the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, urban renewal, and gentrification.

Dr. Harris is an alumna of Lane College and earned MS and PhD degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She has received many awards, including an NSF Early Career Award
Dr. Harris’ research is focused on exploring the connectivity between the functionality of nano- to macro- level films, components, and systems based on their manufacture or design and their life expectancy, thereby elucidating mechanisms by which performance or durability can be predicted. She is interested in using both simulations and experimentation to better understand this connectivity.
By addressing complex fundamental problems, Dr. Harris aims to impact a plethora of industries, although applications of direct interest to her include energy (e.g., polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells), electronics (e.g., organic electronics), and environmental (e.g., water).
She has experience in developing systematic design and manufacturing methodologies for complex energy systems which directly involve material characterization, tooling design and analysis, computational and analytical modeling, experimentation, and system optimization. Currently her research projects focus on investigating the fundamental science associated with fluid transport, materials processing and design issues for energy/electronic/environmental systems.

About Maya Wiley
Maya Wiley is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund. A nationally respected civil rights attorney, Wiley has been a litigator at the ACLU, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc., and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. She has been a program creator in philanthropy, non-profits, government, and higher education. She helped create a criminal justice program for a major foundation in South Africa.
Wiley co-founded and led a national policy advocacy organization, the Center for Social Inclusion, now a part of Race Forward, a national policy strategy organization working to end structural racism. She became the first Black woman to be Counsel to a New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, where she worked to protect and expand civil rights, Minority and Women-Owned Business contracts and broadband access.
Wiley became a Senior Vice President for Social Justice at the New School University, where she also founded the Digital Equity Laboratory. While there, she chaired the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). As chair, she led the release of the “hold” on proceedings against Daniel Pantaleo whose illegal chokehold killed Eric Garner, and Co-Chaired the Mayor’s School Diversity Advisory Group that authored two major reports on integrating New York City public schools.
Wiley has received numerous awards, and has been a public voice for rights, justice, and democracy, through written opinion editorials and as a former legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.

She has longstanding research interests are in computer networking with a focus on application and network-layer services. More recently research considers computing and its role in addressing pressing social problem. For international work this area is called ICTD (D=Development).

She will review basic concepts of nutrition and wellness, including highlighting them through debunking common nutrition myths.
Ms. Barbo earned a BS Dietetics from University of Georgia and an MS in Nutrition Science from Georgia State. She has worked at Georgia Tech since July 2022.
The WST Learning Community offers programs addressing academic and professional issues for women students. Typically, it includes 48 students living in Stein and Goldin Houses (4th St. Apartments A and B), who connect with one another and faculty through monthly dinners, campus receptions, and research panels. All Georgia Tech students and WST mentors are welcome to attend WST Learning Community events. WST Learning Community residents may also be paired with a faculty/staff mentor (optional). Based in the Office of Undergraduate Education, Dr. Mura shares information about fellowships and advises students on applying to a host of fellowships, including Rhodes, Fulbright, Astronaut, Millenium, Hertz, and many more.
Karen Mura, PhD, is the Prestigious Fellowships Advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Education. Karen earned her PhD in English Literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Before arriving at Georgia Tech, she was an Associate Professor of English and the Faculty Fellowship Advisor at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
Karen is committed to an advising model that is based on a teaching/mentoring relationship with students. She is excited to transition into full-time fellowship advising, where she can utilize her classroom experiences and training as she guides students through the application revision process.

Dr. Hugh Crawford received his PhD in American Literature from Duke University. He joined the Georgia Tech faculty as an Associate Professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication in 1996. She will discuss her career and her role directing the Center for Sustainable Communities.
Dr. Jennifer Hirsch is an applied cultural anthropologist recognized internationally for fostering university and community engagement in sustainability and climate action. At the Georgia Institute of Technology, she is the inaugural Director of the Center for Sustainable Communities Research & Education (SCoRE), creating a culture of collaboration in which students, faculty, and staff engage in long-term relationships with community, government, and industry partners to build sustainable communities.
Dr. Hirsch’s research and teaching interests focus on: 1) equity in the sustainable built environment; 2) grassroots sustainability innovation; and 3) community leadership in energy equity.
Dr. Hirsch is also a co-founder and lead coordinator of RCE Greater Atlanta – a Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development - officially acknowledged in 2017 by the United Nations University. She is also Adjunct Associate Professor at Georgia Tech’s School of City and Regional Planning. She serves on the faculty of The Asset-Based Community Development Institute hosted by DePaul University and on the Board of Directors of AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education).
Before coming to Georgia Tech, Dr. Hirsch worked in Chicago as Associate Director of Study Abroad at Northwestern University; as Urban Anthropology Director at The Field Museum of Natural History; and as an independent consultant with clients such as the City of Cleveland, Enterprise Community Partners, the U.S. Green Building Council, The Institute of Cultural Affairs, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Joliet Junior College. Dr. Hirsch received a Bachelor’s degree in American Culture from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
