From 1992 to 1995 he served as Lecturer at Fudan University in Applied Mechanics. Prior to joining UConn, Dr. Tang was a staff engineer at GE Corporate Research Center, Niskayuna, New York.

Dr. Tang joined the University of Connecticut's Mechanical Engineering Department in 2002. His current research interests are structural dynamics and system dynamics, active and passive structural controls, structural health monitoring/diagnosis, smart materials and mechatronics, and large-scale analysis of complex dynamic systems. His research projects are interdisciplinary, encompassing multi-physics modeling and analysis, electro-mechanical integration, and sensing/actuation development and signal processing. Dr. Tang's research has been supported by federal agencies such as NSF and also by industries. While fundamental studies are being pursued in his lab to explore paradigm change in the structure and system dynamics area, research is also being carried out to implement the new findings to practical platforms such as aero-engines and fuel cells.

Dr. Tang directs the UConn Structure and System Dynamics Laboratory.
