{"524131":{"#nid":"524131","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Meadowcreek High School\u2019s FIRST Robotics team competes in the Georgia FIRST District qualifier tournaments","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_self\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;Center for Education Integrating Science,\u0026nbsp;Mathematics and Computing (\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ceismc.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECEISMC\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E)\u0026nbsp;as part of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gostem.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGoSTEM\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;program has\u0026nbsp;facilitated\u0026nbsp;and mentored a group of students at\u0026nbsp;Meadowcreek\u0026nbsp;High School for participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition(FRC).\u0026nbsp;This program works to introduce students\u0026nbsp;to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills.\u0026nbsp; While the program involves\u0026nbsp;designing, manufacturing and programming\u0026nbsp;robots, FRC\u0026nbsp;goes far beyond robotics, with teams examining real-life problems and developing innovative solutions.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMeadowcreek\u0026nbsp;High School\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;FIRST Robotics team, \u0026ldquo;The\u0026nbsp;RoboMustangs\u0026rdquo;,\u0026nbsp;competed\u0026nbsp;in the Georgia\u0026nbsp;FIRST\u0026nbsp;District\u0026nbsp;qualifier tournaments\u0026nbsp;in March. Teams must compete in at least 2 district qualifiers\u0026nbsp;and place in the top 45 to\u0026nbsp;earn an\u0026nbsp;invitation\u0026nbsp;to the State Championship on April 14-16 in Athens, Georgia.\u202f\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe first district event the team\u0026nbsp;competed in was on March 11-12, 2016\u0026nbsp;in Columbus against a field of 40 teams. \u202fThey competed\u0026nbsp;throughout the weekend and\u0026nbsp;qualified\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp;15th\u0026nbsp;place. The team was\u0026nbsp;selected by the 4th seeded team to join the alliance for the elimination rounds. \u202fThey\u0026nbsp;competed with their partners in the elimination\u0026nbsp;rounds (best of three)\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;defeated\u0026nbsp;team #5\u0026nbsp;during the quarterfinals 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals against the #1\u0026nbsp;team. During the semi-finials\u0026nbsp;they\u0026nbsp;secured a place in the finals with another 2-0 win.\u0026nbsp;In the finals they competed valiantly against the #2 seeded team and after the second match the\u0026nbsp;RoboMustangs\u0026nbsp;and their partners emerged victorious to\u0026nbsp;win the Columbus District Qualifier.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOn March 18-19 the\u0026nbsp;RoboMustangs\u0026nbsp;traveled to the Dalton District\u0026nbsp;Qualifier. Again they performed well and were selected by the 4th seeded\u0026nbsp;team\u0026nbsp;captain for the elimination rounds.\u0026nbsp;The team was\u0026nbsp;eliminated in the quarter-finals, however during the award ceremony\u0026nbsp;The\u0026nbsp;RoboMustangs\u0026nbsp;were\u0026nbsp;awarded\u0026nbsp;the Xerox Creativity Award for a creative or unique function of their design. \u202fThe reason highlighted for their\u0026nbsp;award\u0026nbsp;win was their use of a modular system design that allowed them to remove and repair the robot in specific sections. The design had 3 sections, drive train, electronic\/controls, and manipulator and was well integrated into one functional system.\u0026nbsp;From these qualifier successes the team\u0026nbsp;accumulated points\u0026nbsp;which placed them in 16th\u0026nbsp;place overall\u0026nbsp;out of the 65 teams in the state. This\u0026nbsp;qualified them to compete in the\u0026nbsp;Georgia FIRST\u0026nbsp;Robotics\u0026nbsp;State\u0026nbsp;Championship\u0026nbsp;to be held this weekend\u0026nbsp;at\u0026nbsp;Stegeman\u0026nbsp;Coliseum in Athens, Georgia.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECEISMC congratulates\u0026nbsp;Meadowcreek\u0026nbsp;High School\u0026nbsp;RoboMustangs\u0026nbsp;on their\u0026nbsp;accomplishment and\u0026nbsp;qualifying for the\u0026nbsp;State Championship\u0026nbsp;and wish them well as they compete
