Durgin has won the best paper award for IEEE RFID 2016, held May 3-5, 2016 in Orlando, Florida.\u0026nbsp;He is a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDurgin\u2019s paper, entitled \u201cRF Thermoelectric Generation for Passive RFID,\u201d presents a new Georgia Tech invention \u2013 an RF Thermoelectric Generator (RFTG) \u2013 which can be used to convert very low levels of RF power into usable voltages for computation, sensing, and communication.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECounter-intuitively, a nano-scale RFTG can be shown to outperform conventional diode- and transistor-based RF harvesting circuitry, which have hit fundamental limits in recent years.\u0026nbsp;The paper projects that RFID and RF energy-harvesting sensors using RFTGs could operate without a power supply at distances exceeding 100m from readers and\/or radio transmission sources \u2013 a factor of 4 improvement over the state-of-the-art.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIEEE RFID 2016 is the annual flagship international conference for the Council of RFID (CRFID), known for its long papers and low acceptance rates (\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ieee-rfid.2016.org\/\u0022\u003Eieee-rfid.2016.org\u003C\/a\u003E).\u0026nbsp;CRFID was elevated to Council status within the IEEE last year \u2013 essentially a \u201csociety for societies,\u201d capable of engaging multi-disciplinary technologies.\u0026nbsp;Incidentally, Georgia Tech has been instrumental in the growth of CRFID, with ECE\u2019s own Manos Tentzeris and Gisele Bennett making formative contributions to the council.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor the 2016 conference, ECE\u2019s Mary Ann Weitnauer also gave an invited talk entitled, \u201cReliable Sensor Communications with On Demand Network MIMO,\u201d that was extremely well-received as part of the conference\u2019s \u201chot topics\u201d session.\u0026nbsp;Qiongjie Lin, Huanyu Zhang, Hongxian Tian, Sean Nowlan, Gedeon Nyengele, Sajith Mohan Chakkedath, and Jim Stratigos were coauthors of this work.\u0026nbsp;The talk presented a new communications scheme for reliably reading RFID and low-powered, transmit-only wireless sensors that could enable numerous internet-of-things applications.\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EECE Professor\u0026nbsp;Gregory D.
