{"539231":{"#nid":"539231","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Three College of Computing Faculty Earn GT FIRE Awards","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThree College of Computing faculty members recently earned Georgia Tech Fund for Innovation in Research and Education (GT FIRE) awards.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EProfessors Gregory Abowd, Ashok Goel (School of Interactive Computing) and Constantine Dovrolis (School of Computer Science) each had proposals funded for academic year 2016-17. The Offices of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Research award funding annually to support new collaborative programs that are deemed to be innovative and potentially transformative.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETo be eligible for consideration, each professor had to submit a research or educational project summary detailing their transformative idea and its potential impact, as well as a project budget for the estimated $40,000 award.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAbowd will use the award to fund ongoing research into ubiquitous computing and his vision of \u201ccatalyzing the next generation of information technology\u201d with \u201ccomputational skin\u201d that may cover everyday objects. Goel\u2019s GT FIRE funding will support his continuing work to develop virtual teaching assistants like the now-famous \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3067749\/these-graduate-students-had-no-idea-their-teaching-assistant-was-a-robot.html\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E\u201cJill Watson\u201d\u003C\/a\u003E from his Spring 2016 artificial intelligence online course.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDovrolis is part of an interdisciplinary team that includes members from the Schools of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
