{"55036":{"#nid":"55036","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Founder\u2019s Day Honors Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Ivan Allen College of Liberal\nArts (IAC) remembered its namesake Monday, March 15, at the 10\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E Annual Ivan\nAllen College Founders Day. Founded in 1990, the College each year honors the\nlegacy of former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. by recognizing individuals within\nand without the college for their efforts in \u201cProgress and Service.\u201d This year\nalso marks the last such award from the College.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EInterim Dean Kenneth J. Knoespel\nintroduced Mayor Allen\u2019s \u201clegacy of action\u201d through a morning symposium\nshowcasing interdisciplinary research. \u201cIn the past 10 years, Founder\u2019s Day has\nrecognized that the College that bears the name of former Mayor Allen has\nworked to build programs and projects that have participated in change,\nincluding and beyond the disciplines represented by this college,\u201d Knoespel\nsaid. \u201cOur work has also engaged Georgia Tech, the city and almost every\ncontinent around the world.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\n\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EModerated by Associate Dean for Research Susan Cozzens, the symposium\nhighlighted human-centered work within the College and across Georgia Tech in\nthe areas of climate change, security, Africa and in the local community.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAfter kicking off a celebratory\nluncheon with the poem \u201cThe Joy-Bringer\u201d by Professor Thomas Lux, Peter Brecke,\nassistant dean for Information Technology, Cozzens, and John Tone, associate\ndean of Undergraduate Studies, presented the Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy Awards to\nrecognize current students and an alumnus, along with a faculty member, for their\naccomplishments.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEconomics and International Affairs\nstudent Trey Birch won the undergraduate 2010 Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy\nUndergraduate Student Award for his establishment of the Youth Enrichment\nProgram, which works with children in communities surrounding the campus. Cate\nPowell, an International Affairs student, won the 2010 Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy\nGraduate Student Award for the POP Jewelry Collective, which helps create a\nsustainable business that supports the education of children in India.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlumna Sarah Kenagy, winner of the 2010 Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy Alumni Award, is a senior program officer on CARE\u0027s Sexual and Reproductive Health Team. She graduated with an International Affairs degree in\n2007. Sam Nunn School of\nInternational Affairs Associate Professor Adam Stulberg won the 2010 Ivan Allen\nJr. Legacy Faculty Award. Stulberg is co-director of the Center for\nInternational Strategy, Technology and Policy. Students and faculty members each received a\nglass sculpture and a check for $1,000.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFerdinand A. \u201cSki\u201d Hilenski,\ndevelopment officer for the Ivan Allen College, died in July of last year. His\nwife, Lu, and daughter, Cate, accepted an honorary Legacy Award on his behalf,\nin recognition of his vision and work with the Allen legacy and to expand the\nlegacy to all of Georgia Tech. Inman Allen, son of former Mayor Allen, said\nthat without Hilenski\u2019s efforts, the College could not exist in its current\nincarnation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPresident Bud Peterson introduced\n2010 recipient of the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Progress and Service William J.\nTodd. Peterson described the president and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition\nas a Tech alumnus (Management, 1971) who exhibits both service and compassion.\n\u201cBill is leading the effort to make Georgia the national leader in cancer\ncare,\u201d he said. \u201cHe is committed to reducing the human suffering and death to\ncancer.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETodd spoke on Peterson\u2019s ambitious\ndrive to lead a \u201crobust and energetic\u201d campaign to shape the Institute\u2019s next\n25 years and of the importance of leadership \u201cbehind the scenes.\u201d He said the\nInstitute\u2019s motto of \u201cProgress and Service\u201d personifies the Ivan Allen College\nof Liberal Arts and the Institute as a whole. \u201cIt\u2019s the perfect motto for\nGeorgia Tech,\u201d Todd said. \u201cIt is in plain, action-oriented and values-driven\nlanguage. The whole Institute was formed in this [New South] principle, and\nIvan Allen Jr. epitomized that.\u201d \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPast recipients of the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize\nfor Progress and Service include former President Jimmy Carter (2002), former\nU.S. Sen. Sam Nunn (2004) and Helene D. Gayle, with CARE (2009).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBeginning next year, the College\nwill award a new Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage, recognizing recipients chosen from\naround the world who demonstrate Allen\u2019s moral and ethical courage, and his\npositive impact on society. The award is endowed by the Wilbur and Hilda\nGlenn Family Foundation, and includes a stipend of $100,000 for its recipient.\nBoth Allen and Thomas K. Glenn participated in the announcement of the new award.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe Allen legacy inspires the Ivan\nAllen College and all of Georgia Tech to represent in our teaching, research\nand public service all the human values he stood for,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cWe\nintend to provide our students with the means by which they can make decisions\nbased on the moral and ethical principles that led Mayor Allen to risk being\nostracized by his peers to defend what was right.
