2010 Health Systems Distinguished Lecture

The Georgia Tech Health Systems Institute, GVU Center and the Tennenbaum Institute co-sponsor the 2010 Health Systems Distinguished Lecture "Who Moved my Chart? HIT Functionality at Geisinger" by Geisinger Health System President and CEO Glenn Steele.

About Geisinger:
Geisinger is an integrated health services organization widely
recognized for its innovative use of the electronic health record
(EHR), and the development and implementation of innovative care models
including ProvenCare® ("warranty") program and ProvenHealth NavigatorSM
(advanced medical home). The system serves more than 2.3 million
residents throughout 42 counties in central and northeastern
Pennsylvania.

Geisinger was an early adopter of the EHR, having
partnered with Epic Systems since 1995. Although information
technology is conceptualized as a critical component in delivering high
quality/high value care, very little proof exists. Geisinger Health
System has advanced its primary strategic goals by innovating how we
care for our sickest hospital and community based patients by
eliminating unnecessary and often times hurtful services, and by
providing as much care as we can near where our patients live. Without
the availability of near real-time data and dissemination of
information throughout our widespread geographic markets, this care
reengineering could not be accomplished.

Geisinger continues to
be a national leader in information technology because it enables us to
develop new solutions to create value and meaningful improvement in
outcomes recognized both by our patients and our providers.

Speaker's Bio

Glenn D. Steele Jr., MD, PhD, is President and Chief Executive Officer of
Geisinger Health System. Dr. Steele previously served as the dean of
the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine
and as vice president for medical affairs at the University of Chicago,
as well as the Richard T. Crane Professor in the Department of Surgery.

Prior to that, he was the William V. McDermott Professor of Surgery at
Harvard Medical School, president and chief executive officer of
Deaconess Professional Practice Group, Boston, MA, and chairman of the
department of surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital (Boston, MA).
Widely recognized for his investigations into the treatment of primary
and metastatic liver cancer and colorectal cancer surgery, Dr. Steele
is past Chairman of the American Board of Surgery. He serves on the
editorial boards of numerous prominent medical journals.

His
investigations have focused on the cell biology of gastrointestinal
cancer and pre-cancer and most recently on innovations in healthcare
delivery and financing. A prolific writer, he is the author or
co-author of more than 460 scientific and professional articles.
