They\u2019re becoming familiar with a new college-application platform from the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org\u0022\u003ECoalition for Access, Affordability and Success\u003C\/a\u003E. And they\u2019re wondering what to expect from new rules over how families use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThese were just a few of the topics discussed during a media roundtable Georgia Tech held in Washington, D.C., Tuesday evening.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERick Clark, Tech\u2019s director of undergraduate admission, hosted the event, which brought together six admission directors from across the country, representing public and private universities and schools both large and small.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe major application method has changed, the major evaluation has changed, financial aid has changed,\u201d said Stephanie Dupaul, vice president for enrollment management at University of Richmond. \u201cIt\u2019s a different stress level this year because so much cheese has been moved in one year.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe other panelists were:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERachelle Hernandez, associate vice provost for enrollment management and director of admissions at the University of Minnesota.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMonica Inzer, vice president and dean of admission and financial aid at Hamilton College.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJames (Jim) Nondorf, vice president for enrollment and student advancement and dean of admissions and financial aid at the University of Chicago.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EJim Rawlins, director of admissions and assistant vice president for enrollment management at the University of Oregon.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor about 90 minutes, the panelists talked with six reporters about changes and challenges in college admissions. Reporters from the following outlets participated in the discussion: \u003Cem\u003EThe New York Times\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EThe Wall Street Journal\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EThe Chronicle of Higher Education\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EU.S. News \u0026amp; World Report\u003C\/em\u003E and \u003Cem\u003EThe Atlantic\u003C\/em\u003E and \u003Cem\u003EMoney\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe group talked in-depth about retention strategies, college affordability and diversity issues on campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor example, they discussed whether making the FAFSA form available earlier this year will help families. The forms will now use tax information from two years ago, known as \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/issues-action\/LegislativeNews\/Pages\/PPY.aspx\u0022\u003EPrior-Prior Year\u003C\/a\u003E, as opposed to just the previous year.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cA whole sector of students, especially first generation students, might have no clue about the process,\u201d Rawlins said. \u201cRather than early FAFSA being a way to help some of the neediest families have a new way to be ahead, I am worried it\u2019s going to be a new way for these families to feel behind.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EInzer agreed there are concerns about the changes to FAFSA, but remained hopeful.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI really think we need to give it a chance,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is going to give families a chance. We have to work to eliminate the unintended consequences.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhile some described the changes as \u201cdisrupters\u201d to the admissions process, Nondorf noted that the changes are forcing colleges to collaborate and discuss ways to make a positive impact.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt\u2019s good to hear how other institutions deal with these questions,\u201d Clark added. \u201cWhat\u2019s exciting is we\u2019re all talking to one another and learning from one another.
