{"560971":{"#nid":"560971","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Computing Goes Big at KDD 2016","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech College of Computing faculty and students returned triumphant from San Francisco this week after presenting seven papers and earning two awards at the 2016 ACM SIGKDD Conference on\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.kdd.org\/kdd2016\/\u0022\u003EKnowledge Discovery and Data Mining\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(KDD), Aug. 13 through 17.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELeading the way for the awards was a paper titled, \u201c\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.kdd.org\/kdd2016\/subtopic\/view\/firebird-predicting-fire-risk-and-prioritizing-fire-inspections-in-atlanta\u0022\u003EFirebird: Predicting Fire Risk and Prioritizing Fire Inspections in Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E,\u201d in the Applied Data Science track. Stemming from collaborative research done in 2015 by Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Atlanta fellows and the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, the paper was selected as the \u201cBest Student Paper Award\u201d runner-up.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECategorizing fire risk with data analysis\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe paper detailed how the team, mentored by School of Computational Science and Engineering Assistant Professors\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~bdilkina\/\u0022\u003EBistra Dilkina\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~dchau\/\u0022\u003EPolo Chau\u003C\/a\u003E, leveraged machine learning, geocoding, and information visualization, to develop a framework to help fire departments identify buildings and businesses that need to be inspected for fire safety.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe team also developed a methodology for prioritizing commercial properties based on fire risk.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/firebird.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EFirebird computed\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;fire risk scores for more than 5,000 buildings in the Atlanta area, and it identified 6,096 new commercial properties that potentially need to be inspected for fire safety.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFirebird has already made a positive impact on both\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/news\/537731\/georgia-tech-atlanta-fire-dept-extinguish-risk-data-analytics\u0022\u003Elocal and national levels\u003C\/a\u003E. It has improved AFRD\u2019s inspection process, allowing for more informed decisions and enhanced fire safety for Atlanta\u2019s residents. Additionally, the program was highlighted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a best practice for using data to for fire inspections.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cEffective fire inspection targeting is a genuine problem that plagues many fire departments,\u201d said Dilkina. \u201cWe think Firebird is a potent tool that more cities should adopt to help prioritize their fire inspection burden while protecting economic interests and lives from costly fire destruction.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlong with the Firebird research paper award, CSE postdoctoral researcher Mohammad Taha Bahadori was named a 2016 SIGKDD Dissertation Award runner up. Bahadori earned the recognition for his work with scalable multivariate time series analysis.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESix other Georgia Tech papers, which are listed below, were presented at KDD 2016.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E#GTComputing contingent goes big\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn all, more than 20 College of Computing students, faculty, and staff attended this year\u2019s conference. Highlights of the event were presentations from Assistant Professor Le Song and Professor Irfan Essa from the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) and the School of Interactive Computing, respectively.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESong\u2019s address, titled \u0022Dynamic Processes over Information Networks Representation, Modeling, Learning and Inference,\u0022 opened the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www-bcf.usc.edu\/~liu32\/milets16\/#program\u0022\u003EWorkshop on Mining and Learning From Time Series\u003C\/a\u003E. During the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.large-scale-sports-analytics.org\/Large-Scale-Sports-Analytics\/Home.html\u0022\u003EWorkshop on Large Scale Sports Analytics\u003C\/a\u003E, Essa presented findings on the relationship between sports and video when analyzing athletic performances.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlong with the keynote addresses, and paper and poster presentations, the Georgia Tech team also staffed an exhibit\u0026nbsp;booth during KDD.
