Dr. Rohatgi and Suniva were honored for his trailblazing efforts in the field of solar energy. Founded in 2007 by Dr. Rohatgi, Suniva is an Advanced Technology Development Center start-up company that is based in Norcross.

The company's success is built on Dr. Rohatgi's 24-year career at Georgia Tech, where he has been dedicated to making solar energy more efficient and cost-effective. In October, the company completed installation of its first production line, the ARTisun solar cells, which it’s already shipping to solar panel manufacturers around the world. The ARTisun solar cells have about 17 percent to 18 percent efficiency, and Suniva is currently working on a cell that would have an efficiency of 20 percent.

Dr. Rohatgi is a Regents' Professor and a Georgia Power Distinguished Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. On-screen statistics are confined to the JumboTron. Sharing excitement and opinions on the game is often limited to chatting with surrounding strangers.

Yet these amenities, once reserved for the comfort of your living-room couch, will soon be tailored for experience in the stadium via your smartphone.

rofessor Ed Coyle, director of the Arbutus Center for the Integration of Research and Education, is unveiling a new application that allows fans sitting in the stands of an athletic event to access video replays, up-to-the-second statistics, player bios, play-by-play analysis and a wealth of other information designed to enhance the thrill of the game.

Dubbed "eStadium," the application first began as a project in 2001 when Coyle was on the faculty at Purdue University. Personal Digital Assistants (PDA), the precursor to the contemporary smartphone, were still a rare breed at the time and the potential for usage was limited.

Now, with iPhones, Blackberrys and other intelligent devices lining the pockets of millions-and bandwidth evolving to support dense information delivery-the time is ideal to unveil eStadium to Georgia Tech fans hungry for details about the game they're viewing from the stands.

The goal is to go live with the Georgia Tech eStadium at the Wake Forest University-Tech football game on November 7.

"Even if you're in the stands, sometimes you can't figure out what just happened," Coyle said. “This allows you to look at a play as many times as you want."

In addition to the background information and video access, Coyle strongly hints that such future features as user commentary and social networking will allow users to post their thoughts and even find fellow fans in the stands, including former classmates.

"We can develop anything anyone asks us to develop," he said.

The eStadium project has evolved into a joint project with Purdue and is supported by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant along with a gift from Texas Instruments. Purdue's version of the eStadium has been live since 2003.

Georgia Tech's app, though, will be a far snazzier and detailed presentation.

"This is our phase-one deployment," Coyle said. "Phase two will include more wireless (access) in the stadium and a sensor network that will be able to monitor lines at concession stands and outside restrooms."

Coyle recruited a group of 28 students to help complete the project. Four of these students have been in the announcer's booth during games compiling video, statistics and other information for the mobile site. Access is restricted in certain ways: only those present in the stadium can view video, and 3G networks could possibly get bogged down when many fans clamor for a connection. Plans are under way to add Wi-Fi capabilities and employ 4G networks to ensure the experience is smooth.

"You need a code to watch video, and that will be shared with the people in the stadium," Coyle said.

eStadium will be live for both the November 7 game and the highly anticipated University of Georgia game on November 28. There is also a strong possibility the application will be employed during spring basketball season.

"Eventually, we should be able to do something like this for any sporting event," Coyle said. "Each sport has its own pace, so we'll try to customize it for each."

Coyle and his team have been working closely with Georgia Tech Athletics for more than a year to develop and refine the eStadium. The partnership has been encouraging for all parties.

"I think this is a really fascinating collaboration between athletics and academics," said Wayne Hogan, associate athletic director for Georgia Tech. "These students are bright and we like having them around. It's been a great relationship and something we think will be really well-received by our fans."

Once live, the site will be accessible from any Internet-enabled device, but the eStadium team is also tailoring it for one of today's most popular devices. The iPhone, he said, offers the best user experience, so plans are under way for an app version for that platform.

"This is just the beginning," he said. "The sky's the limit."

<status>1</status> <created>1257728400</created> <gmt_created>2009-11-09 01:00:00</gmt_created> <changed>1475895780</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 03:03:00</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Ga. This paper was the result of collaborative work with a number of NEETRAC member utilities. The industry has tended to view
withstand tests as simply pass/fail with little ability to predict future performance. This work has shown that there is much more information in these tests when the results are coupled with typical utility system data.

"Measurement of Cable System Loss Using Time Domain and VLF Techniques" was written by Jean Francois Drapeau with Jean Carlos Hernandez. Mr. Drapeau is a researcher with Hydro Quebec who spent two research sabbaticals at NEETRAC. During this period, Messrs. Drapeau and Hernandez conducted the first study to compare the performance of two different diagnostic techniques. Prior to this work, it had been assumed that these techniques did not give the same findings; this work showed that they are in fact very comparable.

A third presentation supported by the NEETRAC Baseline Program also won a Best Conference Paper Award. The paper entitled "Superhydrophobicity in Power Applications" was written by Nigel Hampton and Frank Lambert; it described the practical applications of coating to extend the life of insulating components.

 <status>1</status> <created>1244160000</created> <gmt_created>2009-06-05 00:00:00</gmt_created> <changed>1475895780</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 03:03:00</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>NEETRAC Personnel Win Best Conference Paper Honors.</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>NEETRAC Personnel Win Best Conference Paper Honors.</sentence>
Team members from the National Electric Energy Testing Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) received three Best Conference Paper Awards from the 2008 IEEE Insulated Conductors Committee Meeting. The honorees will receive their awards this fall at a White House ceremony.

Established in 1996, PECASE honors the most promising researchers in the nation within their fields. Nine federal departments and agencies join together annually to nominate the most meritorious young science and engineering researchers whose early accomplishments show the greatest promise for strengthening America's leadership in science and technology while contributing to the awarding agencies' missions.

"I am truly honored to receive this award," Dr. Romberg said. “I feel blessed for the education and mentoring I received at Rice University and Caltech and for the support which Georgia Tech has given me as a faculty member."

Awarded an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award last summer, Dr. Romberg was nominated for the PECASE award by the U.S. Department of Defense. He was one of 27 investigators selected for the ONR Young Investigator Awards last year from a group of more than 200 applicants. The group is led by James D. Meindl, the Joseph M. Pettit Chair Professor in ECE and director of both the Microelectronics Research Center and Nanotechnology Research Center.

The group received the S.C. Sun Best Student Paper Award from the 2008 IEEE International Interconnect Technology Conference, which was held in San Francisco, Calif. last June. The award winning paper, "A 3D-IC technology with integrated microchannel cooling," was written by D. Sekar, C. King, B. Dang, T. Spencer, H. Thacker, P. Joseph, M. Bakir, and J. Meindl and was published in the Proc. IEEE Int. Interconnect Technol. Conf., pp. 13-15 in 2008.

The paper described compact physical modeling and wafer-level batch fabrication technologies of advanced cooling technologies for 3D stack of high-performance chips. In particular, this paper reports, for the first time, the integration of electrical through-silicon vias with monolithic microchannel heat sink in 3D stack. The demonstrated technologies enable the liquid cooling of each chip in the stack. The reduced thermal resistance offered by microchannel cooling enables substantial improvement of clock frequency as well as reduced power dissipation for each chip in the 3D stack.

Dr. Meindl's group also received the winning paper award of the Motorola Electronic Packaging Fellowship from the 2008 Electronic Components and Technology Conference (ECTC). The conference was held in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The award winning paper, "3D stacking of chips with electrical and microfluidic I/O interconnects," was written by C. King, D. Sekar, M. Bakir, B. Dang, J. Pikarsky, and J. Meindl and was published in the Proc. Electronic Components and Technol. Conf., pp. 1-7 in 2008.

This paper described low-cost chip input/output interconnect and assembly technologies to enable the "routing" of electrical and fluidic networks in a 3D stack of chips. This is important because it enables, for the first time, the ability to deliver
a coolant from the system motherboard directly to each silicon die in the stack to reject heat. These technologies offer significant cost, form factor, and performance benefits over "typical" fluidic delivery methods.

 <status>1</status> <created>1244160000</created> <gmt_created>2009-06-05 00:00:00</gmt_created> <changed>1475895775</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 03:02:55</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>GSI Group won two Best Paper Awards at recent conferences</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>GSI Group won two Best Paper Awards at recent conferences</sentence>
The Gigascale Integration Group, led by ECE Professor James D.
