{"575541":{"#nid":"575541","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Usselman to Step Down as Chair of History and Sociology; Royster Announces National Chair Search","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts will be conducting a national search for a new school chair in the School of\u0026nbsp;History and Sociology (HSOC).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECurrrent HSOC chair, Steve Usselman, will step down at the end of this academic year, returning to a full time role as a professor focusing on teaching and research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIvan Allen College Dean Jacqueline Royster lauded Usselman saying, \u0026ldquo;I give my whole-hearted thanks to Steve Usselman, who, by the end of this year, will have served a term and an additional year as chair. His accomplishments as chair are manifold.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERoyster noted the following highlights from Usselman\u0026rsquo;s terms serving as the HSOC chair:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe secured a higher level of\u0026nbsp;funding for doctoral students.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe garnered more research support for\u0026nbsp;faculty with regard to both time and money.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe pursued various forms of\u0026nbsp;recognition for faculty accomplishments.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe led a thorough curriculum review and faculty workload review.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe provided support, attention, and leadership\u0026nbsp;in\u0026nbsp;the development of new programs (e.g., Sports, Society and Technology; the Social Justice Minor (in collaboration with the School of Literature, Media, and Communication); and Asian Studies (as a cross-college collaboration).\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe produced and led a successful Academic Program Review process for the school.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe increased faculty numbers with strong hires in both history and sociology.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe led the process for changing the name of the school from HTS to HSOC, adding exponentially to the ability of the school to send clearer messages about identity and focus to incoming students.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe developed a new website and promotional materials for HSOC, showcasing the high performance of programs, faculty, students, alumni, and staff.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EHe participated actively on the Ivan Allen College Leadership Team in identifying best practices for the college and executing them at the school level. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERoyster announced the\u0026nbsp;search committee for appointing a new HSOC chair:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESearch Committee Chair\u003C\/strong\u003E: Kaye Husbands Fealing\u0026nbsp;(chair of SPP)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHSOC Committee Members\u003C\/strong\u003E: Dan Amsterdam, Jennifer Singh, William Winders, Laura Bier, Mary McDonald, Douglas Flamming, LaDonna Bowen-Chavers\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIvan Allen College Committee Member\u003C\/strong\u003E: Carol Senf (LMC)\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGeorgia Tech (at large)\u0026nbsp;Committee Member\u003C\/strong\u003E: James Budd (chair, School of Industrial Design, College of Design)\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;On behalf of the School of History and Sociology, the Ivan Allen College, and Georgia Tech broadly, we thank this group of colleagues\u0026nbsp;in advance for their invaluable\u0026nbsp;service in making sure that our search for\u0026nbsp;HSOC leadership\u0026nbsp;is a successful one,\u0026rdquo; Royster said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe ad for the position may be viewed at\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/about\/open-position\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/about\/open-position\u003C\/a\u003E \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts will be conducting a national search for a new school chair in the School of\u0026nbsp;History and Sociology (HSOC).
