{"578621":{"#nid":"578621","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Institute Diversity Honors Four Gender Equity Champions at the Eighth Annual Diversity Symposium","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIn light of this year\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/diversitysymposium\u0022\u003EDiversity Symposium\u003C\/a\u003E theme, \u201cCelebrating Women at Georgia Tech,\u201d Institute Diversity created the Gender Equity Champion Awards to recognize members of the faculty, staff, and student body, and a unit (office, department, school, or lab) for significantly demonstrating gender diversity, equity, and inclusion within the campus community.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Gender Equity Champion Award winners were honored at the Eighth Annual Diversity Symposium on Friday, September 16.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am excited to be part of an effort that celebrates and recognizes the remarkable contributions of campus community members who are advancing gender equity at Georgia Tech,\u201d said Julie Ancis, associate vice president of Institute Diversity and chair of the Gender Equity Champion Awards Committee.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/2016-gender-equity-champion-awards\u0022\u003EGender Equity Champion Award\u003C\/a\u003E recipients have demonstrated one or more of the following in the last three years:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ECommitment to gender diversity, equity, and inclusion.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ELeadership in building a culture of gender inclusion and equity.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBehavior that illustrates commitment to the inclusion of persons within the Institute who represent the gender diversity of the Georgia Tech community.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EOrganized, conducted, and\/or supported events and activities that promote respect and inclusion related to gender and gender expression.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAward recipients included:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFaculty Award \u003C\/strong\u003E\u2013 Mary Frank Fox, ADVANCE Professor, School of Public Policy, and co-director, Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStaff Award \u003C\/strong\u003E\u2013 Shannon Sullivan, graduate program manager, Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStudent Award\u003C\/strong\u003E \u2013 Kendall Rankin, undergraduate student, H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial \u0026amp; Systems Engineering\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EUnit Award\u003C\/strong\u003E \u2013 School of Physics\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMary Frank Fox\u2019s research focuses on gender, science, and academia \u2014 the study of women and men in academic and scientific organizations and occupations \u2014 with significant implications for science and technology policy. \u201cThe Gender Equity Champion Award embodies values that are close to my heart \u2014 equitable conditions that benefit all,\u201d said Fox.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EShannon Sullivan is a licensed professional counselor whose passion is empowering young people to develop themselves personally and professionally. \u201cMy work is about daily conversations with people. For someone to recognize that our individual conversations make a difference in students\u2019 lives, I am deeply touched by this honor,\u201d remarked Sullivan.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EKendall Rankin is the founder and executive director of The Diamond Campaign, a nonprofit she started during her sophomore year to empower women through service and education.
