Imlay Jr. Distinguished Lecture\u003C\/a\u003E, October 27 in the Howey Physics Building.\u0026nbsp;The lecture begins at 5 p.m.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProfessor Blum\u0026rsquo;s lecture, \u0026ldquo;Alan Turing and the Other Theory of Computation,\u0026rdquo; explores one of Turing\u0026rsquo;s lesser known papers from 1948.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlthough lesser known, Blum believes that it is a seminal paper from Turing and sets \u0026ldquo;the stage for a natural theory of complexity for computational mathematics, the \u0026lsquo;other theory of computation.\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo;A Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Blum is a noted authority in the field of computer science. She is the founding director of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/swartz-center-for-entrepreneurship\/project-olympus\/index.html\u0022\u003EProject Olympus\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and co-director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/swartz-center-for-entrepreneurship\/index.html\u0022\u003ESwartz Center for Entrepreneurship\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBlum is internationally recognized for her work to increase the participation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Her contributions include founding the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/awmmath\/home\u0022\u003EAssociation for Women in Mathematics\u003C\/a\u003E, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eyhn.org\/\u0022\u003EExpanding Your Horizons Network\u003C\/a\u003E, and CMU\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/women.cs.cmu.edu\/\u0022\u003EWomen@SCS program\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 2004, she was honored with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=104137\u0022\u003EU.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. \u003C\/a\u003EIn 2009, she was presented the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/homepage\/computing\/2009\/spring\/lenore-blum-honored.shtml\u0022\u003ECarnegie Science Catalyst Award\u003C\/a\u003E for her work with Project Olympus, which promoted economic growth in Pittsburgh by targeting high-tech talent in the region, and for increasing the participation of women in computer science.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBlum\u0026rsquo;s talk will cap off a series of notable lectures from premier computer scientists at Georgia Tech in recent weeks. Turing Award Winner Butler Lampson presented the Capital One Fall \u0026rsquo;16 Distinguished Lecture on September 27.
