Jett to colleagues and students, is the Filipino Jesuit priest and scientist who has led \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ateneo.edu\u0022\u003EAteneo de Manila University\u003C\/a\u003E as president since 2010. Founded in 1859 by the Society of Jesus, the private university, which is located in Quezon City, is the third oldest in the Philippines. Ateneo serves more than 20,000 students, from elementary to graduate school. Its alumni include \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Rizal\u0022\u003EJos\u0026eacute; Rizal\u003C\/a\u003E, the Philippines\u0026rsquo; national hero, and several former Philippine presidents and government leaders.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EVillarin himself is an Ateneo alumnus, graduating from Ateneo de Manila High School and then earning a B.S. in Physics (magna cum laude) in 1980. The scientist\/priest\u0026rsquo;s journey to the presidency of a major Philippine university includes the Ph.D., Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, he received from Georgia Tech in 1997.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat attracted you to study in Georgia Tech? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhat attracted me to Georgia Tech were the faculty members whose expertise I had learned about from their publications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAside from helping me develop deep competence in my field, Georgia Tech also brought me in contact with leading scientists in the field. My classmates were smart, kind, and generous. The programs I took exposed me to both the experimental and theoretical fields of my science. Tech also broadened my horizons through some courses I took in Public Policy.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech deepened my love of learning and taught me the discipline of learning how to learn.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is a vivid memory of your time at Georgia Tech?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI have lots of wonderful memories: Working during the 1996 Olympics, when Georgia Tech was the Olympic Village. Field work with people from the best labs\u0026mdash;such as the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\u0022\u003ENational Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bnl.gov\/world\/\u0022\u003EBrookhaven National Laboratory\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026mdash;in an open farm in Nashville, Tennessee. Setting up air-monitoring stations, such as the one on \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/mapcarta.com\/21407406\u0022\u003EBlackjack Mountain\u003C\/a\u003E. Several months of back-and-forth discussion with a notable scientist and peer reviewer of our \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v391\/n6666\/full\/391471a0.html\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ENature\u003C\/em\u003E publication, \u0026ldquo;A new perspective on the dynamical link between the stratosphere and troposphere.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/a\u003E The presentation of our work at the 1997 \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/sites.agu.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Geophysical Union\u003C\/a\u003E conference in San Francisco\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHow did you get to your current position? Which professors made a big impact on your career path?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter graduating from Georgia Tech, I joined the Climate Studies Division of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.observatory.ph\/\u0022\u003EManila Observatory\u003C\/a\u003E. This appointment opened up several possibilities for me, such as working on climate concerns from the perspective of developing countries, working with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/unfccc.int\/2860.php\u0022\u003EUnited Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change\u003C\/a\u003E as a reviewer of the greenhouse gas emission inventories of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/unfccc.int\/parties_and_observers\/parties\/annex_i\/items\/2774.php\u0022\u003EParties to the Convention on Climate Change\u003C\/a\u003E, as well as doing environmental science and policy work domestically in the Philippines. All these became possible because of the training and degree I got from Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAteneo de Manila must have recognized the breadth and depth of my various experiences when they selected me as university president.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe professors who made a significant impact on my career path are \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/hartley-d\u0022\u003EDana Hartley\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/Robert_Black\u0022\u003ERobert Black\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/nicholas.duke.edu\/people\/faculty\/chameides\u0022\u003EWilliam \u0026nbsp;Chameides\u003C\/a\u003E (now at Duke University), \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ce.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/1331\/overview\u0022\u003EMichael Rodgers\u003C\/a\u003E, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ae.gatech.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/memoriam-former-ae-professor-robert-roper\u0022\u003ERobert Roper\u003C\/a\u003E (deceased), and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.douglasdavis.eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EDouglas Davis\u003C\/a\u003E. They all had their unique way of sharing their passion for their profession and discipline.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat do you like most about your current job? The least?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELike most: Strategic leadership. Like least: Balancing the myriad details of administration.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat has been the greatest challenge in your professional life so far? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERunning a university is not a walk in the park. I have to contend with different publics. Fund raising continues to be a challenge. Keeping myself updated in science while in administration is a tough balancing act. I try to overcome these challenges by being in touch with students and faculty and immersing myself in the urgent challenges of climate and sustainability.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat has been the most gratifying experience of your professional career so far? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEvery graduation is an occasion to celebrate. It is truly gratifying to see young people grow in character and in their learning over the years.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn my own field, I am delighted to see many young Filipinos now taking up atmospheric sciences as a viable career choice. I think they see me as a mentor, which I am only glad to become for them. As a member of the National Panel of Technical Experts of the Climate Change Commission of the Philippines, I am able to give technical input that gives guidance and direction to national policy. I was also a member of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\u0022\u003EIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u003C\/a\u003E when \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/peace\/laureates\/2007\/\u0022\u003Ethe 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was given to the scientific body and Al Gore\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIf you could have taken an alternative career path, what would you be doing instead?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI\u0026rsquo;d still be teaching, but probably flying on the side too, as a pilot.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat advice would you give to incoming first-year students at Georgia Tech? \u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKeep the wonder. Discover and nurture your passion. As you deepen your expertise, broaden your horizons and don\u0026rsquo;t confine yourself to just one dimension. Make friends.
