{"583180":{"#nid":"583180","#data":{"type":"news","title":"GREEN Lab Team Wins IEEE S3S Best Student Paper Award","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EMohammad Faisal Amir, Duckhwan Kim, and Jae Ha Kung received the Best Student Paper Award at the IEEE SOI-3D-Subthreshold Microelectronics Technology Unified Conference (IEEE S3S), held October 10-13, 2016 in San Francisco, California.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThese Ph.D. students from the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) were honored for their paper entitled \u0026ldquo;NeuroSensor: A 3D Image Sensor with Integrated Neural Accelerator.\u0026rdquo; Their co-authors on the paper are their Ph.D. advisor and ECE Professor Saibal Mukhopadhyay, ECE Regents\u0026rsquo; Professor Sudhakar Yalamanchili, and Denny Lie, Mukhopadhyay\u0026rsquo;s former Ph.D. student who now works at Intel. Amir, Kim, and Kung are all current members of the Gigascale Reliable Energy Efficient Nanosystem (GREEN) Lab, which is led by Mukhopadhyay.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENeuro-inspired\u0026nbsp;deep\u0026nbsp;learning algorithms have emerged as a key\u0026nbsp;enabler for performing complex tasks such as feature extraction, classification, and recognition on\u0026nbsp;image\/video data. Currently, such complex processing is mainly performed at the back-end\u0026nbsp;machines. There is a\u0026nbsp;growing need to push\u0026nbsp;learning algorithms\u0026nbsp;into the sensor front-end to\u0026nbsp;facilitate\u0026nbsp;fast decision making and reduce the\u0026nbsp;demand on\u0026nbsp;communication\u0026nbsp;bandwidth. However, the size, weight, and power\u0026nbsp;constraints limit the ability to\u0026nbsp;perform complex processing\u0026nbsp;in the\u0026nbsp;sensor.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis paper presents an\u0026nbsp;innovative system design\u0026nbsp;concept\u0026nbsp;to enable integration of\u0026nbsp;deep learning architecture\u0026nbsp;within a\u0026nbsp;image\u0026nbsp;sensor.\u0026nbsp;The device is known as the NeuroSensor \u0026ndash; a 3D stacked image sensor with an integrated neural network. The NeuroSensor performs on-chip neural computation for in-field decision making and classification, and thus reduces latency and energy consumption for data movement between the sensor and host.\u0026nbsp;The\u0026nbsp;design\u0026nbsp;and analysis presented in the paper creates a new research\u0026nbsp;direction on how to enable complex machine learning at the\u0026nbsp;sensor\u0026nbsp;front-end.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis paper is a key\u0026nbsp;milestone in the\u0026nbsp;research performed at the GREEN lab\u0026nbsp;on\u0026nbsp;intelligent and autonomous\u0026nbsp;image sensors.\u0026nbsp;This is also one of many key\u0026nbsp;publications, and\u0026nbsp;the second best paper award\u0026nbsp;received by GREEN Lab students in 2016\u0026nbsp;on this research topic.
