We are encouraging girls in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades to consider engineering,\u0026quot; Said Carolyn Perry, MakeHer Mentor Program Director.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPerry says the STEM Academy girls meet for six weekly sessions.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;We created musical compositions with computer coding. We give them hands-on activities in computer science,\u0026quot; she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe program focuses on girls to help level the playing field when it comes to engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;Overall, girls represent about one out of every three future engineers, and we\u0026#39;d really like to see that move more toward 50 percent,\u0026quot; said Perry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELily Harris is one of the students in the program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;It\u0026#39;s cool and I like how it shows how track numbers can also be coded. I think it\u0026#39;s cool how it does that,\u0026quot; said the 6th grader. \u0026nbsp;\u0026quot;I\u0026#39;ve had an interest in math since I was in the second grade.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPerry says it\u0026#39;s important to get the girls interested at a young age.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;That way they\u0026#39;re encouraged to take the right steps to get a schedule that includes calculus and physics.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMakeHer Mentor is a collaborative initiative between HV Jenkins School of Engineering, STEM Academy at Bartlett, and Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThey hope to expand the program in the future to include more middle schools.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.wtoc.com\/story\/34239235\/makeher-mentor-teaching-local-girls-about-coding\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ehttp:\/\/www.wtoc.com\/story\/34239235\/makeher-mentor-teaching-local-girls-about-coding\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Csub\u003ECopyright 2017 WTOC.
