The article, entitled “Housing Solutions for Low-Income Families: The Standard for Quality and Sustainability,” serves as a response to the essay “U.S. Public-Housing Transformations and the Housing Publics Lost in Translation,” which was published in the same issue of City & Community.

The authors of “Lost in Translation” argue that revitalized mixed-income communities largely fail to retain individuals who have been displaced from low-income public housing, including those who receive housing choice vouchers. Boston augments their findings by asserting that effective policy prescriptions addressing affordable housing must address the institutional and environmental conditions relevant to local areas.

Boston offers a set of key strategies for affordable housing policy, such as actively involving affected families, insulating affordable housing services from the whims of the political agenda, and advocating for housing conditions that are acceptable for ordinary working-class households.
