{"588347":{"#nid":"588347","#data":{"type":"news","title":"GT Computing Faculty Set for SXSW Sessions","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESpring is just around the corner, so it must be time for \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.sxsw.com\/\u0022\u003ESXSW\u003C\/a\u003E!\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis year, faculty from Georgia Institute of Technology\u0026rsquo;s College of Computing are heading to Texas for the SXSW festival, both the SXSWedu portion, March 6 - 9, focusing on education and the SXSW Interactive Festival a week later.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOne of the most significant innovations being highlighted at SXSWedu this year is the evolving convergence of online and offline learning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETaking up this topic for a fireside chat set for Wednesday, March 8, are Senior Associate Dean \u003Cstrong\u003ECharles Isbell\u003C\/strong\u003E, former dean and Executive Director of the Center for 21st Century Universities \u003Cstrong\u003ERich DeMillo\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EDavid Joyner\u003C\/strong\u003E, adjunct lecturer and Udacity course developer.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe three educators will discuss \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/schedule.sxswedu.com\/events\/event_PP68309\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EThe Premise and Promise of Hybrid Higher Education\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E during a 30-minute session at the J.W. Marriott Austin, Griffin Hall, at 3:30 p.m.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe conversation is expected to cover new approaches to computer science education that merge digital and traditional methodologies. The session should raise important questions about whether or not hybrid models can meet growing global demand for skilled technical workers, improve educational outcomes for a broad spectrum of students, and reduce the cost of higher ed.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGT Computing faculty will also address important questions next week during the Interactive track of the 2017 SXSW Conference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs part of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tech-for-humanity.ieee.org\/\u0022\u003EIEEE Tech For Humanities Series\u003C\/a\u003E, School of Interactive Computing Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EThad Starner\u003C\/strong\u003E and Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EMelody Jackson\u003C\/strong\u003E are presenting a featured session titled \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/schedule.sxsw.com\/2017\/events\/PP63067\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ENot Your Mama\u0026rsquo;s Wearables\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe hour-long session, set for March 13 at 12:30 p.m. at the J.W. Marriott Austin, Salon 5\/6, will use Starner\u0026rsquo;s work in voiceless speech recognition and brain-computer interfaces as a springboard for a discussion on creating more dynamic and seamless user interfaces. Jackson\u0026rsquo;s work with wearables for dogs that facilitate canine\/human interaction will also be demonstrated during the event.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlso participating in an IEEE Tech For Humanities Series event is School of Computer Science Professor \u003Cstrong\u003ETom Conte\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs part of a panel conversation, Conte will draw on his expertise to discuss \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/schedule.sxsw.com\/2017\/events\/PP65652\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EGoing Past Moore\u0026rsquo;s Law\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E and what technologies may be key in continuing to increase the speed of computer processing.
