{"588550":{"#nid":"588550","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Writing and Communication Program Hosts Banneker High School Students for Campus Tour, Sample Class Session","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/wcprogram.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EWriting and Communication Program\u003C\/a\u003E welcomed 43 Banneker High School Advanced Placement English students and their teachers on February 28, 2017, to attend class, meet students and faculty, and tour the Georgia Tech campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe day provided a bridge between Banneker and higher education, fostering confidence and motivation in the Banneker students who brought their intellectual curiosity and energy to the campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This was my first college tour,\u0026rdquo; said 11\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E grade Banneker student Calle Holloway, \u0026ldquo;I felt like I would fit in.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EChavon Grazier was surprised that \u0026ldquo;the modern design of Georgia Tech meshed with the nature of Atlanta\u0026rdquo; and loved the \u0026ldquo;spectacular views of the rooftop garden.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENy\u0026rsquo;asia Daniel and Aysha Miller both noted the campus diversity, with Daniel reflecting that everyone \u0026ldquo;really made [her] feel welcome\u0026rdquo; and that she \u0026ldquo;belonged.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Plus, the Insomnia cookies were incredible!\u0026rdquo; she added. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJoshua King, Ph.D., assistant director of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s Communication Center, taught a special session of his English class on \u003Cem\u003EHamilton: An American Musical, \u003C\/em\u003Eengaging Banneker students in a group project about how they might creatively reinterpret history.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I felt like there would be no restrictions on authentic learning,\u0026rdquo; said Bintou Tunkara after King\u0026rsquo;s class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EElaine Merino added, \u0026ldquo;Dr. King destroyed the stereotype that college professors are only interested in research\u0026hellip; from his brief lecture, I could sense his deep love of teaching and his students.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKing also gave the students a tour of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/communicationcenter.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECommunication Center\u003C\/a\u003E, which particularly impressed Demontae Barrino, who was enthusiastic that Georgia Tech students can receive professional tutoring.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring a pizza lunch, the students were welcomed by Ivan Allen College School of Literature, Media, and Communication Chair Richard Utz and four undergraduate students who spoke honestly about the challenges and rewards of college.
