Barnes is the director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/horizons\u0022\u003EHorizons at Georgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E program at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ECenter for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing\u003C\/a\u003E (CEISMC).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHorizons at Georgia Tech provides summer learning experiences to underserved K-12 students and supports them and their families during the school year. Through Barnes\u0026rsquo;s efforts, Georgia Tech is able to host more than 100 K-12 students during the summer for up to six weeks of enrichment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as swimming lessons in \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.crc.gatech.edu\/about\/facilities#node-245\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s aquatic facilities\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENot only is Barnes responsible for the program\u0026rsquo;s daily operations, he also ensures that funding is available, and he recruits teachers and volunteers. Notably, Barnes engages the entire Georgia Tech community. For example, Georgia Tech President G. P. \u0026ldquo;Bud\u0026rdquo; Peterson and College of Sciences Dean Paul M. Goldbart are regular guests as \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/552321\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;Mystery Readers,\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/a\u003E reading stories aloud to elementary students.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EParticipating families have consistently rated the program as \u0026ldquo;outstanding.\u0026rdquo; Donors consistently rate Barnes highly on leadership, organization, and service.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEver tireless and industrious, Barnes has taught \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/enrichment.gatech.edu\/gt-1000-first-year-seminar%20\u0022\u003EGT 1000\u003C\/a\u003E, the seminar course to help freshmen students transition to college life and work, for the past three years.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBarnes also serves on the MLK Planning Committee. In that capacity, he initiated Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/engage.gatech.edu\/content\/mlk-day-service-sunday-supper\u0022\u003EMLK Sunday Supper\u003C\/a\u003E.
