{"590133":{"#nid":"590133","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Join the Club: Epic Intentions ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EEpic Intentions serves as an interdisciplinary society of Georgia Tech volunteers whose purpose is to aid local nonprofits, social enterprises, and civic-minded entrepreneurs through service-oriented design projects.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMembers of Epic Intentions are assigned to various projects working with Atlanta based nonprofit organizations.\u0026nbsp;Teams of around five to six students, with one team leader, work together throughout the semester to complete their projects while developing technical skills.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThird-year computer science major and Vice President of Campus Relations Anna Herrera\u0026nbsp;joined Epic Intentions during the spring of her second year at Tech. After applying to the organization, she was assigned as a team leader for the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/heroforchildren.org\/\u0022\u003EH.E.R.O. For Children\u003C\/a\u003E project. H.E.R.O is a nonprofit organization in Georgia that focuses on quality of life care for children with HIV\/AIDS. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Team leaders are the liaison between the nonprofit organizations and Epic Intentions,\u0026quot; Herrera said. \u0026quot;The other team members work to complete the project using their unique skill sets.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach semester, the nonprofit organizations are recruited by the Epic Intentions board. Once a nonprofit agrees to work with the club, they give team leaders an idea of what they need. Then the team is assigned to the project, and it is up to them to decide specific details and goals.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETeams in the past have worked with organizations including\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.belovedatlanta.org\/\u0022\u003EBeloved Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/tcwfi.org\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Working Families\u003C\/a\u003E, and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/enchantedcloset.org\/\u0022\u003EEnchanted Closet\u003C\/a\u003E. They have worked to improve marketing strategies, database systems, fundraising efforts, and more. Smith Building, and is free and open to the public. Undergraduate and graduate students from any major are welcome to apply.\u0026nbsp;The application is brief but includes short response portions that are reviewed by the group\u0026#39;s executive board.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The board is looking for people who are passionate about the club and ready to commit time to their project,\u0026rdquo; Herrera said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe organization expects members to attend weekly team meetings and commit\u0026nbsp;around three to five hours per week to\u0026nbsp;their projects.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EApplicants will have the opportunity to choose from a predetermined list of nonprofits and can choose to apply for a team leader position, if interested. This gives students the opportunity to choose their level of time commitment as well as a cause\u0026nbsp;they are passionate about.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It has been exciting to watch Epic Intentions grow over the past three semesters,\u0026quot; Herrera said. \u0026quot;From building close relationships with nonprofits to increasing applicant numbers, the club is expanding in an exciting direction.
