Pierotti Memorial Scholarship\u003C\/a\u003E, and Georgia Tech has named \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/590779\u0022\u003EWang a co-recipient of the Love Family Foundation Scholarship\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach year, the Love Family Foundation Scholarship goes to a member of the graduating senior class with the most outstanding scholastic record. The $10,000 scholarship is provided by the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.printpack.com\/the-gay-erskine-love-foundation\u0022\u003EGay and Erskine Love Foundation\u003C\/a\u003E. Students in all six of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s colleges are considered for the award. Aizenman, \u003C\/strong\u003Ephysics major \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/requirements\u0022\u003Ewith business option\u003C\/a\u003E, is the recipient of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/osfa.gatech.edu\/cynthia-bossart-and-james-efron-scholarship\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECynthia L. Bossart and James Efron Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, which recognizes high academic achievement by a College of Sciences major who is a non-Georgia resident. Aizenman conducts research in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/fernandezlab.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESoft Condensed Matter Laboratory\u003C\/a\u003E, led by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/alberto-fernandez-nieves\u0022\u003EAlberto Fernandez-Nieves\u003C\/a\u003E. He participates in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/smart.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Science and Math Research Training (SMaRT)\u003C\/a\u003E scholarship program. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERachel E. Barker\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EKrishma Singal\u003C\/strong\u003E were selected for the \u003Cstrong\u003ERoger M. Wartell, Ph.D., and Stephen E. Brossette, M.D., Ph.D., Award for Multidisciplinary Studies in Biology, Physics, and Mathematics\u003C\/strong\u003E. The award recognizes undergraduates who are accomplished in research at the interface of biology and either physics or mathematics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBarker\u003C\/strong\u003E is graduating with a B.S. in Physics. In the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/s1.sponberg.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EAgile Systems Lab\u003C\/a\u003E of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/simon-sponberg\u0022\u003ESimon N. Sponberg\u003C\/a\u003E, she developed a way to record activation signals from the major muscles involved in wing control while tethered moths track an oscillating visual stimulus. She has presented her research in meetings of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.sicb.org\/\u0022\u003ESociety for Integrative and Comparative Biology\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESingal \u003C\/strong\u003Eis also graduating with a B.S. in Physics. In the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/chaos.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECHAOS (Complex Heart Arrhythmias and Other Oscillating Systems) Lab\u003C\/a\u003E of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/flavio-fenton\u0022\u003EFlavio H. Fenton\u003C\/a\u003E, she studied pattern formation by brine shrimp and their dynamics in response to light. She presented research findings in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.aps.org\/meetings\/meeting.cfm?name=mar16\u0022\u003EAmerican Physical Society meeting in March 2016,\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp; where, according to Fenton, Singal won the award for best undergraduate student talk. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAlexander J. Buser,\u003C\/strong\u003E double major in physics and mathematics, has won the \u003Cstrong\u003EA. Joyce Nickelson and John C. Sutherland Undergraduate Research Award\u003C\/strong\u003E. This award recognizes excellence at the interface of mathematics and physics. Buser has extensive research experience. In the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cra.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Relativistic Astrophysics\u003C\/a\u003E, he worked with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/tamara-bogdanovic\u0022\u003ETamara Bogdanovic\u003C\/a\u003E analyzing the mechanism that leads to pairing of supermassive black hole binaries after galaxies merge. He has started working with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.physics.gatech.edu\/user\/carlos-sa-de-melo\u0022\u003ECarlos Sa De Melo\u003C\/a\u003E, exploring theoretical methods to analyze two-band superconductors. He is the president of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.sps.physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Society of Physics Students\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECarson P. Kirby \u003C\/strong\u003Ehas received the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/osfa.gatech.edu\/metha-phingbodhipakkiya-memorial-scholarship\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMetha Phingbodhipakkiya Memorial Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. The award recognizes academic achievement. Kirby is majoring in applied mathematics with a business concentration and a minor in computational data analysis.\u0026nbsp; He completed training and internships in actuarial science. He used to play first trumpet in \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gtband.net\/marching-band\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s marching band\u003C\/a\u003E and now plays with the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/gtband.net\/jazz-ensemble\/\u0022\u003Ejazz band\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMichelle S. Kwon\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EChloe L. Stanton\u003C\/strong\u003E are the recipients of the College of Sciences\u0026rsquo; \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.undergradresearch.gatech.edu\/oura\u0022\u003EOutstanding Undergraduate Researcher Awards\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/strong\u003E Recipients are selected on the basis of involvement in long-term research projects, participation in conferences, published research papers, displayed leadership within the research environment, and unique contributions to the field.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKwon \u003C\/strong\u003Eis graduating with a B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in biology. Her research experience includes detection of GMO (genetically modified organisms) in consumer products, exploration of crystallization techniques with lysozyme, and characterization of myocilin mutants for protein stabilization. She worked with \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/faculty\/lieberman\/\u0022\u003ERaquel L. Lieberman\u003C\/a\u003E on the project \u0026ldquo;Thermal Stabilization of Olfactomedin Domain of Myocilin: Insights into the Evolution of the 5-Bladed Propeller.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStanton \u003C\/strong\u003Eis graduating with a B.S. in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. She worked for four years in the lab of \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/Jennifer_Glass\u0022\u003EJennifer B. Glass\u003C\/a\u003E on the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in the modern and ancient oceans, with a focus on marine nitrous oxide production during the Proterozoic Era. She placed second for giving the best talk at the \u003Ca href=\u0022Southeastern%20Biogeochemistry%20Symposium\u0022\u003E2017 Southeastern Biogeochemistry Symposium\u003C\/a\u003E and first for presenting the best poster at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/abgradcon.org\/\u0022\u003E2017 Astrobiology Graduate Conference\u003C\/a\u003E. She will be presenting posters at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.lpi.usra.edu\/meetings\/abscicon2017\/pdf\/3542.pdf\u0022\u003E2017 Astrobiology Science Conference\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/cms.eas.ualberta.ca\/Geobiology2017\/\u0022\u003EFirst International Geobiology Symposium\u003C\/a\u003E. In the fall she will start her Ph.D. at the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.google.com\/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant\u0026amp;ion=1\u0026amp;espv=2\u0026amp;ie=UTF-8#q=Penn+State+Geosciences\u0022\u003EDepartment of Geosciences at Penn State.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMary Francis M. McDaniel\u003C\/strong\u003E, a double major in Earth and atmospheric sciences and in environmental engineering, is the recipient of the \u003Cstrong\u003ERutt Bridges Undergraduate Research Initiative Award. \u003C\/strong\u003EMcDaniel works with \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.eas.gatech.edu\/people\/Ellery_Ingall\u0022\u003EEllery D. Ingall\u003C\/a\u003E analyzing iron aerosols to determine their oxidation states and composition. This research should help advance understanding of ocean fertilization and productivity. In her spare time, McDaniel enjoys horse riding, hiking, and trying new foods.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECharles M. Wang,\u003C\/strong\u003E graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry and in Computer Science, has received two awards: the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/osfa.gatech.edu\/robert-pierotti-memorial-scholarship\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERobert A. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Cstrong\u003ELove Family Foundation Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWang has a GPA of 4.0 in both his majors and has done undergraduate research. In the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, he worked in the lab of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/janata\/jiri%20(art)\u0022\u003EJiri \u0026ldquo;Art\u0026rdquo; Janata\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;for almost two years. Wang left the lab because mathematics had captured his interest.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFunded by a\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/urop.gatech.edu\/content\/presidents-undergraduate-research-awards\u0022\u003EPresident\u0026rsquo;s Undergraduate Research Award\u003C\/a\u003E, Wang worked with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/people.math.gatech.edu\/~jyu67\/\u0022\u003EJosephine Yu,\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;an assistant professor in the School of Mathematics. The undergraduate research has yielded two articles co-authored by Wang.\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1606.01814\u0022\u003E\u0026ldquo;Generalized Permutohedra from Probabilistic Graphical Models\u0026rdquo; has been posted on arXiv.org\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and is under review for publication in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.siam.org\/journals\/sidma.php\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003ESIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. Another research article, \u0026ldquo;Toric h-vectors and Chow Betti Numbers of Dual Hypersimplices,\u0026rdquo; is in preparation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECarlin E. Zaprowski \u003C\/strong\u003Eis the recipient of \u003Cstrong\u003Ethe Virginia C. and Herschel V. Clanton Jr. Scholarship\u003C\/strong\u003E, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement of a student planning to continue in the medical field. Formerly majoring in psychology, Zaprowski has shifted to the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/neuroscience\u0022\u003EB.S. in Neuroscience program\u003C\/a\u003E.
