  <body><![CDATA[<p>After the El Nino weather event of 1998 resulted in one of the hottest years on record up to that point, what was termed&nbsp;a&nbsp;global warming hiatus or pause then went into effect. For 11 years, temperatures didn&#39;t stray far from their usual averages. That slowdown puzzled scientists and added fuel to the political fire over climate change policies.
