Allen Hyde’s Forthcoming Article in ‘Social Currents’ and Faculty Development Grant

Allen Hyde, assistant professor of history and sociology, has a forthcoming article in the Southern Sociological Society flagship journal Social Currents analyzing the impacts of financialization on income inequality and redistribution, which served as inspiration for his dissertation completed in 2016. The coauthored article with Michael Wallace and Todd Vachon uses data from 18 nations from 1981 to 2011 to examine the ways that the growth of finance has contributed to rising inequality of market incomes while often simultaneously reduced the ability of the welfare states in affluent nations to decrease inequality through redistribution. Link to article: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/2329496517704874

In addition, Dr. Hyde attended the the Luxembourg Income Study Summer Workshop at the University of Luxembourg in Belval through an IAC Faculty Development Grant and School of History and Sociology (HSOC) funding. The Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) and Luxembourg Wealth Study (LWS) contain high-quality individual and household income and wealth data from nations across the globe for a variety of years and provide ample opportunities for cutting-edge research on income and wealth inequality (as well as gender inequality, welfare state generosity, and other topics), which will help fuel future research in those areas.
