{"595389":{"#nid":"595389","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Renowned Roboticist Seth Hutchinson Among Three New IC Faculty","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ic.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing\u003C\/a\u003E (IC) has hired three new faculty members to join its staff, two of whom will arrive on campus in time for the Spring 2018 semester.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAmong the three is renowned roboticist \u003Cstrong\u003ESeth Hutchinson\u003C\/strong\u003E, who will be KUKA Chair for Robotics, a title last held by Adjunct Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EHenrik Christensen\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Seth is an incredibly talented researcher and professor,\u0026rdquo; IC interim chair \u003Cstrong\u003EAmy Bruckman\u003C\/strong\u003E said. \u0026ldquo;His wealth of experience will be an invaluable asset to our students and faculty.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe KUKA Chair for Robotics was established in 2006 by a $1.5 million grant from \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.kuka.com\/en-us\u0022\u003EKUKA Robotics\u003C\/a\u003E, a North American subsidiary of KUKA Roboter GmbH and a global leader in robot manufacturing. Christensen, who was the inaugural KUKA Chair, held the position from 2006-2016.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHutchinson will also be an associate director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.robotics.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines\u003C\/a\u003E (IRIM).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I am delighted that Seth will be joining IRIM as an associate director,\u0026rdquo; IRIM Director \u003Cstrong\u003EMagnus Egerstedt\u003C\/strong\u003E said. \u0026ldquo;Seth brings with him technical sophistication and creativity, a passion for robotics research and education, and a highly compelling vision for the future of robotics. I look forward to him joining our Georgia Tech robotics family.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EPrior to accepting a position at the Georgia Tech, Hutchinson spent nearly his entire career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He began his time there in 1990 as an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, advancing to associate professor in 1996 and full professor in 2003. During that time, he also served as a visiting professor at a number of international posts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHutchinson\u0026rsquo;s research interests lie in robotics, specifically vision-based control, motion planning, planning under uncertainty, pursuit-evasion, localization and mapping, locomotion, and bio-inspired robotics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe co-authored two books on the topic: \u003Cem\u003EPrinciples of Robot Motion \u0026ndash; Theory, Algorithms, and Implementations\u003C\/em\u003E and \u003Cem\u003ERobot Modeling and Control\u003C\/em\u003E. He also served as editor-in-chief of \u003Cem\u003EIEEE Transactions on Robotics\u003C\/em\u003E from 2008-13.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHutchinson received his education at Purdue University, earning his bachelor\u0026rsquo;s, master\u0026rsquo;s, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the school in 1983, 1984, and 1988, respectively.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHutchinson will begin at Tech in January 2018.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESauvik Das\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EMatthew Gombolay\u003C\/strong\u003E have also joined IC\u0026rsquo;s faculty ranks. The latter will begin in January 2018, while Gombolay will arrive on campus in time for the Fall 2018 semester. Das, who completed his Ph.D. this year at the University of California, Berkeley, studies human-computer interaction, data science, and cybersecurity.
