New HIV Care Center Designed by Georgia Tech’s SimTigrate

SimTigrate Design Lab at Georgia Tech has partnered with an Atlanta-area HIV care center to design a new, client-centered space that will support greater collaboration of the care team. The layout of Positive Impact Health Centers' (PIHC) new location will improve coordination and communication of care between departments, and increase the amount of patient-provider interactions. The center’s current Midtown location will close on September 20 and will re-open to the public on September 26 in Decatur.

In a statement released by Positive Impact Health Centers, CEO and President Larry M. Lehman said, “As a leader in client-centered HIV care, we are excited about the new location and client-centered designed space. After an exhaustive search of Midtown, the agency could not find a location to accommodate the square footage and transportation needs of patients. Decatur was found to have the next highest zip code of those served by the agency.”

The new space, located at 523 Church St. Decatur, GA, 30030, will better accommodate the rapid growth in patients, services, and programming needs for the Atlanta community. The expansion will also provide the square footage for an in-house pharmacy for patients, opening in the near future. By providing a better experience for patients, PIHC hopes to improve patient adherence to care and ultimately their health outcomes.

The research team at SimTigrate has developed deep expertise on clinic layout through research on patient-centered medical homes recently completed for the Military Health System and previously for Mercy Care and Cherokee Indian Hospital. “The care staff at Positive Impact Health Centers deal with complex patient cases that require access to their numerous service lines. Their existing facilities made this kind of collaboration difficult. We were able to work with their architects to come up with interior layouts will make it easier for the clinic staff to work together to provide patient-centered care,” said Jennifer DuBose, associate director of SimTigrate and project lead.

PIHC’s Duluth Center will also be moving to a new facility in November 2017 that also benefited from input by the SimTigrate Design Lab. For more information, visit positiveimpacthealthcenters.org.
