{"596877":{"#nid":"596877","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Renmatix representatives visit RBI","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ERenmatix CTO Fred Moesler visited campus Aug. 30 to share insights and identify opportunities for collaboration with the Renewable Bioproducts Institute and its affiliated faculty and students.\u0026nbsp; About 30 students attended a seminar and luncheon. During the course of a content-rich day, a series of faculty presentations discussed a wide range of topics related to the conversion of biomass into sugars and specialty fibers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERenmatix is focused on finding an economically effective way to unlock the chemical building blocks of plant life using only heat and water.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMoesler was accompanied by product development director Mike Smith, as well as process engineers Sean Calahan and Derek Carlson\u0026mdash;both Georgia Tech alumni.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the seminar, \u0026ldquo;Renmatix and the Whole BioBarrel,\u0026rdquo; Moesler showed that cracking cellulose economically to meet national goals is not just \u0026ldquo;green\u0026rdquo; but critical to meeting the nation\u0026rsquo;s energy and materials needs, and that corn-based ethanol alone as an endpoint will never achieve those goals.\u0026nbsp; He described the company\u0026rsquo;s Plantrose\u0026trade; technology as a \u0026ldquo;bridge between biomass and the fuels and chemicals industry.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp; It uses supercritical hydrolysis to deconstruct the biomass, using only heat and water. By using this process, Renmatix has developed a clean lignin stream for processing into feedstock chemicals, and a crystalline material with many of the properties of the nanoscale without the costly production process.\u0026nbsp; Learn more here: \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/renmatix.com\/\u0022\u003ERenmatix\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOver lunch, students had the opportunity to discuss the scientific challenges being tackled by the company and to gain insights into how to make themselves attractive to potential employers.\u0026nbsp; \u0026ldquo;Do internships and co-ops, any chance you can get,\u0026rdquo; advised Carlson.\u0026nbsp; \u0026ldquo;Learn how to run large equipment\u0026mdash;practical experience is very important.\u0026nbsp; And think about your 10-year plan as much as your two-year plan.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMoesler urged students to research an organization before an interview in order to understand how they might fit in, and where they might contribute.\u0026nbsp; Once hired, Moesler counseled, \u0026ldquo;Don\u0026rsquo;t get pigeon-holed.
