Vis 2017: Georgia Tech Visualization Research Expands New Paths to Understanding Data

Georgia Tech researchers are presenting new techniques and research for information visualization and visual analytics this week, Oct. 1-6, at the IEEE Vis 2017 conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

Georgia Tech research is led by School of Interactive Computing faculty and students, and also includes School of Computational Science and Engineering researchers.

Among the 20 Georgia Tech papers and posters in the technical program at InfoVis and VAST (Visual Analytics Science and Technology) are those that include a variety of approaches portending a future where data analysis tools will be as commonplace as word processing software.

Visualization work, already inherent to many enterprises, is gaining wider adoption and creating a wave of new opportunities and research innovations in the space. Visualizations are designed to create interactive representations of data that allow users to explore its many facets and connections in order to gain greater insight into data sets.

Some emerging themes in this year’s Georgia Tech work include machine learning methods, new techniques to explore data patterns (including augmented reality), modeling neural networks, and finding connections within graphs, such as for biological systems, network security and finance.

John Stasko, Interactive Computing, and his co-authors were presented one of five Test of Time awards Tuesday morning at the plenary ceremony for their research from VAST 2007. The paper, Jigsaw: Supporting Investigative Analysis through Interactive Visualization was co-authored by John Stasko, Carsten Görg, Zhicheng Liu, and Kanupriya Singhal.

Explore GT research from Vis 2017 below and come back through the week for a look at the people in Georgia Tech’s VIS Lab as well as coverage of the Test of Time Award.
