{"596952":{"#nid":"596952","#data":{"type":"news","title":"IC Researchers Earn Test of Time Award for VAST 2007 Paper","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/john-stasko\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJohn Stasko\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E and three co-authors were presented with one of five Test of Time awards Tuesday at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ieeevis.org\/\u0022\u003EIEEE VIS 2017\u003C\/a\u003E conference in Phoenix, Ariz., for research presented at the Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) 2007 conference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe paper of note, titled \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~stasko\/papers\/vast07-jigsaw.pdf\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EJigsaw: Supporting Investigative Analysis through Interactive Visualization\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, was co-authored by Stasko, \u003Cstrong\u003ECarsten G\u0026ouml;rg\u003C\/strong\u003E, \u003Cstrong\u003EZhicheng Liu\u003C\/strong\u003E, and \u003Cstrong\u003EKanupriya Singhal\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe team\u0026rsquo;s 2007 research developed a visual analytic system, called Jigsaw, which addresses a challenge investigative analysts face when working with large collections of text documents: Connecting embedded threads of evidence to formulate hypotheses. As the number of documents and concepts in such cases grows larger, making sense of the information becomes more difficult.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJigsaw represents documents and their contents visually in order to help analysts examine reports more efficiently and develop theories about potential actions more quickly. The system performs rudimentary text analysis including sentiment detection, similarity comparison, and clustering, among other tasks, on the documents and then provides multiple interactive visualizations of the documents\u0026rsquo; text.
