{"598129":{"#nid":"598129","#data":{"type":"news","title":"GT Computing Faculty and Alum Awarded ASSETS Paper Impact Award","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESchool of Interactive Computing Professors \u003Cstrong\u003EKeith Edwards\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EBeth Mynatt\u003C\/strong\u003E were given the 2017 ASSETS Paper Impact Award for their 1994 paper \u003Cem\u003EProviding Access to Graphical User Interfaces \u0026ndash; Not Graphical Screens\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe award is given every other year to the authors of a paper from the ASSETS conference that was presented at least 10 years ago, and has had significant and sustained impact in the literature.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECollege of Computing and GVU Center alum \u003Cstrong\u003EKathryn Stockton\u003C\/strong\u003E (M.S. CS, \u0026rsquo;94) was also a co-author of the paper and was recognized for her contributions, as well.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEdwards and Mynatt, the current and former directors of the GVU Center, were presented the award at this year\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/assets17.sigaccess.org\/\u0022\u003EASSETS conference\u003C\/a\u003E, taking place this week in Baltimore, Md. Each received a plaque, and the team was awarded a cash prize of $500.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe awarded paper highlighted the Mercator project, which had a significant and lasting impact on accessibility to graphical user interfaces. It was foundational in enabling and setting the direction of screen reader technology for \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/X_Window_System\u0022\u003EX Windows\u003C\/a\u003E, and opening up opportunities for assistive technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe paper was one of the first to raise and tackle the challenge of providing screen reader capabilities in graphical user interfaces.
