Arts@Tech Season Features Work by Student-Directed Dance Company

RAIIN Dance Theater, co-founded by Georgia Tech student Raianna Brown, will perform the evening-length work In Human as part of the Arts@Tech professional artist series on November 17.

In Human is a celebration and examination of Black culture through the lens of spoken word, contemporary trap music, jazz, and hip hop. The dance company partners with the Georgia Tech School of Industrial Design to create a new experience in which an engineered set, designed to evoke the Krog Street Tunnel, transforms the stage. The physical, high-energy movement of the RDT dancers juxtaposed with the familiar Atlanta cityscape embodies the human connection between art and social justice, all set to a score of classical and contemporary sounds of the Black experience.

Choreographing and producing a new dance piece while enrolled in industrial engineering at Georgia Tech is a major undertaking for fifth-year student Raianna Brown. "This would not be possible without the work of so many people and the help of our sponsors," she says. She credits several Georgia Tech students working on the production: dancers DeLauryn Brown and Justyn Baker, costume designer Skylar Royal, sound engineer Kevin Jones, technical/projection mapping by Chelsi Cocking, and musician Matt Jinks. Georgia Tech students Ta Nycia Wooden and Camille Atere-Roberts work as part of the RAIIN administrative team.

In Human is one of several works in the Arts@Tech performance series this year that showcase the convergence of great art and great technology, and help accomplish the Office of the Arts' mission of Activate, Engage, and Produce.
