But it\u0026rsquo;s now the end of an era, and how we keep computers at pace with progress is a fundamental question of the future of computing. Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s newest research center, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/crnch.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Ethe Center for Research Into Novel Computing Hierarchies (CRNCH)\u003C\/a\u003E, is tackling this problem head-on.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECRNCH hosted an all-day summit on the future of computing on Nov. 3. \u0026ldquo;We are unique in the nation as the first multidisciplinary center focused on post-Moore computing,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/thomas-conte\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETom Conte\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, the co-director of the research center and a professor joint appointed in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchools of Computer Science\u003C\/a\u003E (SCS) and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ece.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EElectrical and Computer Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E (ECE).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe center has more than 30 dedicated faculty members from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Computing\u003C\/a\u003E, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/coe.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E, and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/gtri.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Research Institute\u003C\/a\u003E. Together, they address the post-Moore world by researching quantum computing, neuromorphic computing, design science, approximate computing, and more. CRNCH\u0026rsquo;s goal is matchmaking between researchers and funding, students and internships, companies and labs to test their product.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;CRNCH is really bringing people together,\u0026rdquo; said \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/lewlefton.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELew Lefton\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, assistant vice president for research cyberinfrastructure in the office of the Executive Vice President for Research. \u0026ldquo;Working outside silos where domains collide is where really interesting science is happening.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThroughout the day, leaders in computing discussed the problems facing the industry and how to solve them. As keynote speaker \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/engineering.nd.edu\/profiles\/pkogge\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPeter Kogge\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, the McCourtney Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Notre Dame said, \u0026ldquo;We\u0026rsquo;re hitting a third wall and solving that wall is going to require architectural changes.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKogge was followed by talks from a wide range of experts, including:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/crd.lbl.gov\/about\/staff\/computer-science\/john-shalf\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJohn Shalf\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, department head for computer science at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/moin.ece.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMoinuddin Qureshi\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, an associate professor in ECE;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=jim+ang\u0026amp;ie=utf-8\u0026amp;oe=utf-8\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJim Ang\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, manager of the Exascale Computing Program at Sandia National Laboratories;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u0026nbsp;and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/brian-konigsburg-69052b1b\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBrian Konigsburg\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, chief architect at Northrop Grumman\u0026rsquo;s superconducting computer program.\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe College also had strong support from its faculty at the CRNCH summit. SCS Professor and CRNCH Co-Director \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scs.gatech.edu\/people\/12928\/vivek-sarkars\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EVivek Sarkar\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E spoke on software challenges in heterogeneous computing, noting, \u0026ldquo;Essentially what happens in the post-Moore era is we need to innovate more.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EThe School of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026rsquo;s presence at the CRNCH Summit included presentations by school chair \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~bader\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDavid Bader\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, Professor and Co-Executive Director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ideas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute for Data Engineering and Science\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~saluru\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESrinivas Aluru\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, and Senior Research Scientist \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~jriedy\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJason Riedy\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EA focus of the day was the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/crnch.gatech.edu\/rogues-gallery\u0022\u003ERogues Gallery\u003C\/a\u003E, a new project initiated by CRNCH that focuses on next-generation hardware and uncommon technologies.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;What happens when novel prototypes hit reality?\u0026rdquo; Riedy said. \u0026ldquo;We want to not focus on just static data; we want to focus on when these sets change. This is one of the founding ideas behind the creation of the Rogues Gallery.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ERiedy is leader on the grant to purchase the first hardware to be featured gallery, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/news\/596243\/georgia-tech-awarded-iarpa-contract-evaluate-emu-technology-system\u0022\u003EEmu Chick\u003C\/a\u003E.
