Finn\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECalvin Runnels\u003C\/strong\u003E, a third-year biochemistry major who conducts research with Chem\/Biochem Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ww2.chemistry.gatech.edu\/~lw26\/\u0022\u003ELoren Williams\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/hsayani.com\/\u0022\u003EHussein Sayani\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E, a former Ph.D. student of EAS Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/shadow.eas.gatech.edu\/~kcobb\/\u0022\u003EKim Cobb\u003C\/a\u003E, now a postdoctoral researcher in Boston University\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe 2017 fellows\u0026rsquo; projects inspired and encouraged the second cohort and the audience.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBeveridge partnered with \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.isye.gatech.edu\/users\/santanu-dey\u0022\u003ESantanu Dey\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E, associate professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, to study the attrition of students admitted to Ph.D. programs at Georgia Tech during the period 2002-2012. According to Dey, who presented the project at the poster session, their big take-away is how little is known about the churn of Ph.D. students at Tech compared with undergrads.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDespite the limited data, the study showed clear differences in rates of Ph.D. completion between men and women and among racial groups. The gaps varied across Georgia Tech schools. The hope, Dey said, is to discover the practices of the schools with high rates of Ph.D. graduation across the board so that they can be shared with other units that are not doing so well.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMeanwhile, Sayani teamed up with \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.library.gatech.edu\/about\/staff.php\u0022\u003EJerrold Mobley\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E, public services associate in the Georgia Tech library, and \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/michellekgaines.populr.me\/dr-michelle-gaines\u0022\u003EMichelle Gaines\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E, a former postdoctoral researcher in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and now an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Spelman College. Their project, called Culture Xchange, focuses on person-to-person engagement as a means to tear down barriers, said Mobley, who discussed the work at the Nov. 15 poster session.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith the help of 10 volunteers, they are testing the idea. Through structured discussions, collaborative exercises, and paired excursions, participants share not-so-obvious aspects of their daily lives with each other. The hypothesis, Mobley said, is that \u0026ldquo;anyone who has the opportunity to engage in real one-on-one interactions with any person of any cultural identity, race, creed, etc., has no choice but to respect who that person is and eliminate any biases that they might have had before.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Inclusive excellence is a core value of the College of Sciences,\u0026rdquo; said College of Sciences Dean and \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/sutherlandchair.cos.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESutherland Chair\u003C\/a\u003E Paul M.
