MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow, actor/singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson, and author/poet Robert Penn Warren are just a few of the notable Americans winning scholarships for postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the U.K. Georgia Tech's Calvin Runnels, a senior in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, can now add his name to that list. Runnels is part of one of the most diverse Rhodes groups yet, with 10 African-American students – the most in a single Rhodes class – and four from schools that had never had winners before. Runnels is also the second self-identified transgender student to win a Rhodes scholarship.
