Allchin Early Career Professorship\u003C\/a\u003E. The endowed professorship is nominated by College of Computing Dean \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/people\/zvi-galil\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EZvi Galil\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, and celebrates an early career professor who demonstrates considerable promise in the field of computing.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It means a lot to me,\u0026rdquo; Kim said. \u0026ldquo;The award honors my research and teaching efforts that I am putting at Georgia Tech.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKim \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scs.gatech.edu\/news\/585141\/college-computings-taesoo-kim-has-passion-nitty-gritty-details-internet-security\u0022\u003Ejoined\u003C\/a\u003E the SCS faculty in 2014 after finishing his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He immediately started working in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scs.gatech.edu\/people\/10835\/lance-fortnows\u0022\u003EInstitute for Information Security and Privacy\u003C\/a\u003E, where his research focuses on systems security.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe is most interested in building secure computing systems by studying design, system implementation analysis, and the separation of trusted components. Much of his research involves detecting and recovering from cyberattacks. His work has already garnered research grants from the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and many others.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYet Kim is as passionate about his teaching as his research. Even though he is a self-taught coder, taking an operating system class in college taught him the value of formal computer science education.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The role of a teacher is not to just convey massive amounts of existing knowledge to students, but to be deeply involved in the students\u0026rsquo; learning process, stimulating their intellectual curiosity, and inspiring them with a love for building good systems,\u0026rdquo; he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETo this end, he instructs students through coding, peer teaching, and team exercises like hacking competitions. Kim implements these techniques in the Information Security Lab he teaches every semester.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKim is the second SCS faculty member to be awarded this endowed professorship. Assistant Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~hadi\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHadi Esmaeilzadeh\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E was the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scs.gatech.edu\/news\/248371\/hadi-esmaeilzadeh-dark-silicon\u0022\u003Efirst recipient\u003C\/a\u003E. The chair is named after alumnus \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jimallchin.com\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJames Allchin\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, who managed the development of Microsoft Windows products among others during his time at the company.
