{"600031":{"#nid":"600031","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Visiting Algorithm Specialist is Making an Impact During Time at CSE","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EEarlier this year, dedicated algorithm specialist, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/graal.ens-lyon.fr\/~abenoit\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAnne Benoit\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, joined the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E for a year-long contract to teach and work on algorithms research in computational science. Benoit\u0026rsquo;s primary research interests include algorithm design and multi-criteria scheduling techniques for parallel and distributed platforms, with a focus on energy awareness and resilience.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile moving from France to Georgia for a year turnaround is no small feat, especially for a family with two young daughters, this was an opportunity that was several years in the making for Benoit.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBenoit will be working at Georgia Tech until Summer 2018, with much of her time spent researching alongside CSE Professor and Associate Chair \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/~umit\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026Uuml;mit Cataly\u0026uuml;rek\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. The two first worked together more than ten years ago while collaborating for a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/citation.cfm?doid=2501654.2501664\u0022\u003Esurvey paper on workflow scheduling\u003C\/a\u003E and have been trying to find an opportunity to work together again ever since.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Both our teams had been working on pipelined workflows for some time. We discussed our research at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ipdps.org\/\u0022\u003EIPDPS\u003C\/a\u003E conference and decided we should collaborate. I also went to visit \u0026Uuml;mit at Ohio State University to initiate collaborations. It took several years to come up with the survey paper,\u0026rdquo; said Benoit.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBenoit decided to come to Georgia Tech to initially strengthen collaborations with a year-long visit to research alongside Cataly\u0026uuml;rek after becoming involved with some of the scheduling problems his research group is currently working on. However, the timely opportunity to teach the CSE algorithms class \u0026ndash; Benoit\u0026rsquo;s area of expertise \u0026ndash; presented itself after her initial decision to research at the school of CSE. She was asked if she would be willing to teach it, of which, Benoit agreed to.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBefore joining Georgia Tech, Benoit was serving as an associate professor, teaching in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ens-lyon.fr\/DI\/?lang=en\u0022\u003E\u0026nbsp;Computer Science Department at ENS Lyon\u003C\/a\u003E, and doing her research in the Computer Science Laboratory, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ens-lyon.fr\/LIP\/\u0022\u003ELIP\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBenoit is active in conference organization and has performed various roles over the years, most recently serving as the papers co-chair for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.supercomp.org\/\u0022\u003ESupercomputing Conference\u003C\/a\u003E SC\u0026rsquo;2017, and as the program chair for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ipdps.org\/\u0022\u003EIPDPS\u0026rsquo;2018\u003C\/a\u003E. Apart from conference organization, Benoit is a principal investigator of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/graal.ens-lyon.fr\/~abenoit\/Keystone\/\u0022\u003EKeystone Inria Associate Team\u003C\/a\u003E with Vanderbilt University on \u003Cem\u003EScheduling Algorithms for Sparse Linear Algebra at Extreme Scale. \u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen she is not researching algorithm design and scheduling techniques for parallel and distributed platforms, she can be found outdoors \u0026ndash; whether in the form of skiing, camping, or hiking \u0026ndash; is dependent on the weather. Benoit is also an avid French horn enthusiast and has been playing the instrument for 25 years.
