Mindfulness Week: Live in the Present

Mindfulness, the art of living in the present, benefits an individual’s mental health by reducing the stress of everyday life. By thinking about where you are now, you can remove negative thoughts in your head that can hinder your productivity, success, and happiness. In order to promote mindfulness on Georgia Tech’s campus, Health Initiatives is teaming up with Campus Recreation Center (CRC), Dining Services, GT Meditation Club, YesPlus Club, and multiple professors to create a week filled with events and activities focused on living in the present.

Mindfulness is a practice that one can be achieved in many different ways. Health Initiatives has an entire line-up of activities that will let you try out different approaches to mindfulness. Starting on Monday, February 5th, 2018, Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff will be able to participate in multiple mindfulness events and activities. The week includes meditation courses, tabling events, and even a dark chocolate sampling!

In addition to the Mindfulness Week events, Health Initiatives will be offering a free, weekly drop-in mindfulness class for faculty, staff, and students. Each class will provide a guided meditation and discussion of the benefits of continued practice. Classes will be held in the Student Center Crescent Room Tuesdays from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., from January 16th through April 24th.

Also, the GT Mediation Club is offering a 5-week meditation course (every Sunday). The course begins on February 4th, 2018 and ends on March 11th, 2018. Throughout the 5 weeks, you will learn about meditation practices designed to bring out a greater sense of calmness and clarity. This series will help calm your thoughts and discover the natural clarity of a balanced mind. In the modern world, it is difficult to find a time and place to step back and focus on mindfulness, but with this 5-week course, one will be able to reach mindfulness with ease. The course fee is $15.00, and for more details contact jtsukahara@gatech.edu.
