601511 news 1517252189 1517252255 <![CDATA[Yellow Fever National Vaccine Shortage]]> Due to a national vaccine shortage of the Yellow Fever vaccine, students, faculty, and staff who plan to travel abroad may be affected. The Stamps Health Center is currently out of the vaccine and other providers are also running out.  The company that manufactured the vaccine is building a new factory and it will not be ready for some time.  There is an experimental vaccine from Europe approved for use by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) which is in use at several Atlanta clinics which may be an option for students traveling to countries where the vaccine is required.   There are important considerations with this vaccine.

The experimental vaccine may be more expensive and must be given four to six weeks before travel.  The clinics chosen to give this vaccine are part of a national study and have more requirements of patients in addition to the prescription for the vaccine.   If students aren’t sure if they are going to need the vaccine, they can check the website for the Centers for Disease Control:  www.cdc.gov/travel  and input the country they are traveling to.  The same site has a list of providers that are authorized to carry the Yellow Fever vaccine.  All of these clinics require an advance appointment and some only serve specific populations.  If students have a travel medicine appointment already scheduled they will want to contact the clinic and make sure the clinic has the vaccine in stock.  If students need an appointment they will want to start now trying to find a clinic with stock.
