Almost a decade and a half later, democratic norms and institutions are greatly weakened and the prospects for EU membership have dimmed.\u0026nbsp; How did this happen? What are the prospects for a reversal of Turkey\u0026rsquo;s authoritarian trajectory? What does Turkey\u0026rsquo;s authoritarian turn mean for its relations with the United States and Europe?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELecture by\u0026nbsp;Steven A. Cook\u003C\/strong\u003E, PhD, Eni Enrico Mattei Senior Fellow for Middle East and Africa Studies, Council on Foreign Relations\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESteven A. Cook is an expert on Arab and Turkish politics as well as U.S.-Middle East policy. Cook is the author of\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EFalse Dawn: Protest, Democracy, and Violence in the New Middle East\u003C\/em\u003E;\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EThe Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square\u003C\/em\u003E, which won the Washington Institute for Near East Policy\u0026rsquo;s gold medal in 2012; and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ERuling But Not Governing: The Military and Political Development in Egypt, Algeria, and Turkey\u003C\/em\u003E. Cook has published widely in foreign policy journals, opinion magazines, and newspapers, and he is a frequent commentator on radio and television. He also currently writes the blog\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EFrom the Potomac to the Euphrates\u003C\/em\u003E. Prior to joining CFR, Cook was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution (2001\u0026ndash;2002) and a Soref research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (1995\u0026ndash;1996). Cook holds a BA in international studies from Vassar College, an MA in international relations from Johns Hopkins University\u0026rsquo;s School of Advanced International Studies, and both an MA and a PhD in political science from the University of Pennsylvania.
