Yet three College of Computing students not only survived the IEEEXtreme online programming competition on Oct. 14, 2017, they came in third internationally out of more than 3,000 teams worldwide.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Team GT\u0026rdquo; included School of Computer Science Ph.D. students \u003Cstrong\u003EMajid Farhadi\u003C\/strong\u003E and \u003Cstrong\u003EYu Gao\u003C\/strong\u003E, and CS undergraduate \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.animeshf.com\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAnimesh Fatehpuria\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E. All are competitive programmers who have placed well in previous competitions. Farhadi\u0026rsquo;s past IEEEXtreme team came in first in 2015. Fatehpuria \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/592773\/cs-undergraduate-student-animesh-fatehpuria-finds-niche-competitive-programming\u0022\u003Ewon second\u003C\/a\u003E in last year\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/codecon.bloomberg.com\/\u0022\u003ECodeCon\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDespite their prior success, the hackathon was still a challenge for these veterans. Every hour multiple programming problems were released for 24 hours straight. Participants gain points not just for solving the problem correctly, but also for the speed and complexity of their solution.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe winner can be determined by a mere second. In the 2017 competition, the top 11 teams all solved the problems accurately, so ties were broken by time penalties.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBut for Team GT, it\u0026rsquo;s not all about winning.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We enjoy solving problems,\u0026rdquo; Farhadi said. \u0026ldquo;This helps students to practice and improve \u0026nbsp;their skills.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe hopes more students will participate in this year\u0026rsquo;s challenge.
