The College of Sciences joins the celebration by inviting the perspectives of African-American colleagues through a two-part Q\u0026amp;A.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/about\/staffdirectory\/bonnie-harris\u0022\u003EBonnie Harris\u003C\/a\u003E is the program director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/gift\/real\u0022\u003EGeorgia Intern-Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT)\u003C\/a\u003E program at CEISMC (Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing). The program is a collaborative undertaking of Georgia corporations and universities providing industry internships and research fellowships for K-12 teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EUnder Harris\u0026rsquo;s leadership, in 2012 GIFT received the inaugural \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.tagonline.org\/events\/stem-education-awards\/\u0022\u003ESTEM Education Award\u003C\/a\u003E from the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.tagonline.org\/\u0022\u003ETechnology Association of Georgia\u003C\/a\u003E for excellence in promoting STEM in Georgia. A few years later, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cos.gatech.edu\/hg\/item\/539531\u0022\u003ECasey M. Bethel was named 2017 Georgia Teacher of the Year\u003C\/a\u003E. Bethel is the first-ever GIFT teacher to receive this award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAt CEISMC, Harris also manages the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/gift\/real\u0022\u003EResearch, Experiment, Analyze, Learn (R.E.A.L.) program\u003C\/a\u003E, which places high-school students in STEM-related research internships or business internships. She also oversees the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ceismc.gatech.edu\/siemens\u0022\u003ESiemens Region Six Annual Competition in Math, Science and Technology\u003C\/a\u003E, which attracts high-school student researchers from Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Puerto Rico.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe serves on several civic boards and speaks widely on the subjects of teacher internships and the preparation of underrepresented students for STEM careers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat is the accomplishment you are proudest of so far?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nOne of my favorite quotations is from the great German literary figure Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026ldquo;Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them to become what they are capable of being.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMy job as GIFT program director provides me opportunities to live this philosophy every day!\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EI get to work with teachers desiring to be the best they can be. I get to see high-school students \u0026ndash; many of whom are minorities \u0026ndash; and our next generation of great scientists as if they were already what they are capable of becoming.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFacilitating opportunities for teachers, students, and future scientists to showcase their skills and accomplishments is what I am proudest of. Doing so is all about potential and what can be!\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat does Black History Month mean to you?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nI grew up during an era when the contributions and accomplishments of black Americans were seldom acknowledged.
